I want to run Planetside 2 on High, what needs upgrading?

Motherboard: MSI MS-7641

CPU: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor, ~3.4GHz

Video Card: SAPPHIRE 11188-22-20G Radeon HD 6950 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

Ram: 8gb

OS: Windows 7

PSU: Should be 650 or 750 watts.

I play in 1950x1080

Is it my CPU that needs to be replaced? Or something else? Also, to note, I changed all the settings in Planetside 2 to low, hardly any fps gain. Fps is fine until in large complexes with lots of people.

Let me know if anymore info is needed.

Your CPU is actually alright, but it seems your CPU is bottlenecking it.

Therefore upgrading your CPU and motherboard should serve well.
I would recommend, depending on your budget, either the Core i5 3450/3470 or the AMX FX 8320/50.

The above CPUs are within the same price range, around $190-200. Of course, the 3570k is available if you want to overclock.
1. So with the 3450/3470: H77 chipset e.g. Gigabyte GA-H77M-D3H Motherboard for $85
2. For 3570k: Z77 chipset e.g. ASRock Z77 PRO3 Motherboard for $100
3. 8320/8350: Gigabyte GA-970A-D3 Motherboard for $100

Total costs:
1. $280
2. $340
3.$315

Note: with 2. and 3. you will need an aftermarket CPU cooler for overclocking. The Hyper 212 for $35 is ideal.

I play Planetside 2 daily and so do many of my friends. We have tested it with multiple rigs so I'll give you a brief rundown on what you need to know.

First, Planetside 2 is by far the most CPU intensive game I've ever encountered. There can literally be hundreds of people crammed into a small area with explosions going off everywhere.

It does not take a lot of GPU power so you are probably alright in terms of video card for high settings. Not max, but mostly high at 1080.

As I'm sure you've figured out, Planetside does not like AMD CPUs. We overclocked my friend's Phenom II x4 to 4GHz and still had framerate dips into the low 30's pretty regularly. Sometimes in the upper 20's for massive battles. He decided to upgrade to an FX-8350 which we overclocked to 4.5 and the frames still drop into the 30's and average in the mid 40's. This was all done with an overclocked 7870xt so no graphics bottleneck. In short, no current AMD CPU is even close to getting you to good frames.

The Core i7 3630qm at 3.2 GHz in my laptop still only averages around 45 fps with drops into the mid to low 30's during big battles so that's about what you would get out of some of the lower clocked and multiplier locked i5's.

Only my 2500k at 4.6 GHz and my other friend's 3770k at 4.4 GHz offer averages near 60 fps with drops into the low 50's.

My point is anything other than an overclocked i5 or i7 is going to give you mediocre performance at best. I would definitely skip AMD entirely and go with an i5. Preferably one that can be overclocked to at least 4.4 GHz.

Is the Motherboard I have now incompatible with Intel, or just too old for the newer CPU's?
And yes, it does help a lot, now I know what to save up for, lol.

Ah, I didn't know that, thank you very much, lol. Thanks for helping me figure this out, I'm not the best when it comes to PC hardware, not something I've messed with much, as you can probably tell, heh.
