Hi All,
I have been researching about Laptops for the past one month.
My Budget is around the 1200 USD mark, which is around 60,000 INR.

My liking is towards Sony, the EA series which has the wrap design. Because I feel SONY is the only laptop brand that uses good quality plastics and has superior build quality.

Am I heading in the right direction?

More about : sony brand laptops

I have always liked Sony computers and Sony products in general. I do feel they are often overpriced for the components offered, but build quality and reliability are typically outstanding.

I have an older Sony laptop from around 6 years ago that is still going strong today. In fact, the screen on it looks looks almost better than the one on my brand new Lenovo Y400.

My girlfriend also has a Sony laptop she purchased last year and I was really impressed with the quality materials it was made out of. It just feels solid and expensive.

If you want absolute value for your money Sony probably isn't the choice for you, but if you want great quality with an expensive feel Sony is the way to go.

Thanks for the prompt reply JD88.
I am not typically looking for 100% value to money. The only two reason I am impressed with Sony is
1. Great Build Quality (Have not seen any other brand come close to it)
2. Amazing looks (Again, have not seen any other brand close to it)

I will wait for others on this forum to reply back as well with their views.
However JD88, if SONY was the brand to go with, how is this one for the take?

I will be using the laptop for:
Primary - MS Office, You Tube, emails, Photoshop, Photo Editing etc...
Secondary - Music, Movies etc..

Sony would be pretty low on my list, too pricy for the specs.

ASUS, Samsung, Lenovo, DELL XPS laptops.

No i dont think so. Yes it's right that "Sony" is a great laptop manufacturer - but their laptops are often "overpriced" in my experience I think "Lenovo" and "Asus" are both reputable companies with large fanbases , and has a very low malfunction rate. So In terms of balancing price and quality, I tell you Lenovo and Asus are best.

I have a Vaio & can highly recommend them, they are superb!

They are the Macbook Pro's of the Microsoft market so go for it :)

I am not up to date with laptops right now because I am not in the market for 1 ( I usually do my research 6 months prior to purchase)

However here are some must have specs to look for in a modern laptop:

Finger print recognition (for security)
Fast boot times (think ultrabook) a Windows 7 or 8 machine should be able to deliver.
Optical drives are not priority remember that there is nothing a modern flashdrive or external hard drive cannot provide that a DvD or BluRay can.
So USB 3.0 is essential !
Large Harddisk space, storage of around 250, 500GB or1TB should be more than enough. External can provide additional if needed.
A high res screen is one of the most important features, since your eyes are important & visuals just make it worth the price so make sure it's a good quality screen.

Lastly some other brands to compare the laptop with:

Remove DELL from the above quoted list and replace with HP you are fine

Sony makes good products, but there are better options out there. ASUS also makes high quality products. I would also suggest a Dell, they have gotten over there cheap plastic and design days and are starting to build better machines now. Stay away from Acer (cheap quality) and HP (way overpriced).

I'd stay away from Toshibas, they use well, Toshiba hard drive's which won't last very long. I'm not even sure the Hitachi makes laptops. I thought Hitachi was the budget hard drive division of Western Digital.

Hardly. Every notebook model is a particular case. You should study one model's strengths and weaknesses, not assume that it is good because it's manufactured by Y or X brand. I can name you a couple of Sony laptops with the Vaio brand printed on it that are plainly tragic.

nope. i prefer Dell and HP. because in my own experience other brands doesn't last long. but my Dell Inspiron is still kicking and my HP pavilion still runnung. both of them are bought 6years ago 2008. well its my own experience I praise Dell and HP for its long lasting power :)

One discouraging word on Sony as they announced they are getting out of PC's so you have no guarantee on support down the road.

I've only know one person with a Sony and the processor fried after a year. That model was about 5 or 6 years ago so i've not had any experience with the brand. I imagine SOny like other brands have so good models and some not so good models. I always concentrate on models and not brands when I purchase.

there was a test somewhere and it's said Macbook pro is the best laptop to run Windows since it has no installed software of the producer.

But if you want a pure Windows, Sony is highly recommended. I lived in Japan, tried both Hitachi and Toshiba and Nec, but I was contented with Vaio the most.

Well Actually a 1200 from almost anyone will be made with 1200 parts.

Sony is getting out of the PC business so support may not be great in the future.

Also Sony is an ODM and they design not manfacture their laptops. OEM's manufacture them for Sony.

You do realise commenting on a post related to what should I buy more than a year later is irrelevant right?

The OP has definitely bought an item by now, the thread is merely open because his question was answered
