Slow Linux Server

Our server is not three years old, worked perfectly 'til a few weeks ago. It has become slow in booting up, processing and a backup that used to take max 10 mins, takes two hours. Our service provider says it is not software related, the hardware needs to be replaced. Could that be true without testing?

top, iotop or ideally glances will tell you whats going on on the machine. Of course you should look in the system logs for abnormal conditions (like read errors on the disk).

Linux installations do not typically degrade noticeably in performance as they grow older (unlike Windows).

Tom's hardware is not the best choice of venues for Linux related questions.

Thanks, the funny thing is, when I reboot the server, speed is up to normal for two to three hours, then it slows down again. I still cannot understand that hardware would respond that way.

That does sound unusual for a hardware issue - but its worth ruling the hardware out first by checking the disk(s).

From there your best bet would be to ask in a more Linux focused forum.
