I've been using the same GPU now as I have been for a year, and it's been working fine. In early December, I had an issue where the display wasn't working. The trick was to use an elastic band to hold the connector on my desktop in place. When the mini HDMI cable was held up, it displayed perfectly. Until a few days ago.

Yesterday, it just stopped. I fiddled with it, and it came back. Today, it was working fine from starting up and while playing DotA 2 and answering e-mails. I shut it down to update, and now it won't display. There was a brief moment when I changed the HDMI cable (using a mini HDMI converter that came with the GPU) that I could see my screen displaying perfectly again, but I can't get it back.

Do you think this is an issue on nVIDIA's end? With the GPU just being a bit faulty? My monitor seems fine. For a brief moment, changing the cable itself (not the HDMI-miniHDMI converter) did work, but then it stopped.

You need to do basic troubleshooting by swapping each component:
1) monitor
2) cable
3) graphics card

It sounds like a loose connection though. I didn't understand if you changed the END of the HDMI cable, or the entire cable. If you changed the entire cable, then it sounds like the HDMI connector to the PC is defective.

If possible, try a completely different video output. Do you have a DVI output?

I'm not sure if you require audio, but try a different video output just for troubleshooting.

SUMMARY:
Troubleshooting in your scenario is actually very simple. Just swap each component (different cable, different monitor/TV, different graphics card or just use a different computer). One of these is the issue and the problem will go away when you use a different component.

Just an update, I took the elastic bands off and let my computer sit for about 20 minutes. I woke it up from sleep, and it's displaying well. Does this fit in with anyone's experience? Obviously, something physical is involved at some point, but would a cable be the issue or what would be hardware (the GPU)?

I'm actually going to drop by my local computer guy in a bit to grab some components. It's a mini HDMI on my GPU, but a DVI for the other two options, not HDMI. I need to swap some parts out, you're right, but I think this is a connection issue now. My first bet is the cables, but yeah I've been troubleshooting like that for a bit. Thanks.

Here's sort of a curve ball, now that it's been happening. Because my power button is set to "Sleep", I press it and my machine does just that. If I reactivate everything, the monitor often works - without having touched the cables. Any additional clues?

That doesn't change the BASIC TROUBLESHOOTING concept:
1) change the screen, or
2) change the cable, or
3) change the PC/Graphics card

Simply change each of these and repeat whatever caused you to have issues. For example, if your cable was the issue and replacing it causes the issue to go away then you had a defective cable.

Don't overthink this.
