command prompt not working

I am using Windows 7 and when I type anything into start/prompt field nothing happens at all. It jus tstays there without any messages or response at all. As an example I typed cmd and pressed enter key and nothing. If I click on see more results jus tabove the prompt it displays and error message saying "windows can't access the specified devise, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the file" Any help /advice greatly appreciated

Hello, have you tried creating a new user account, through the control panel (Start -> Control Panel -> Add or remove user accounts). Just add an account and log in from it to see if your start search works from there. If it works, you could move your files over to it using this page for directions:

If it doesn't work, you could try running a system restore if the problem just recently occurred. Just set a date to before it stopped working.
