best for future i7 3770k or i7-3930K

Solution
in rendering and gaming 3770k seems to be doing very well!it depends on how heavy your renders are!3930k is of course going to offer more freedom and options but it depends on how heavy your rendering is!i dont think you will need 3930k even for a future proof system!
It really comes down to what you are going to be doing. Right now very few games are written to take advantage of more than about 3 threads. For this reason there is very little reason to get more than a quad core for most gaming systems. While there are a couple games thta can take advantage of more thread they generally dont yield a lot of performance increase. I have a friend who is a programmer and asked him why this is the case and he explained that it is extremely hard to program to take advantage of extra cores or threads and get any type of real performance boost from them. He also said without a real change to compilers it doesnt look to change any time soon.

So until you are reaching up into the high end multi-media application where the cost is much higher than a game will you find that they have spend the time and effort to program for additional threads.

So the best processor for the future is the one that best fit your needs.

775 was great then 1336/1156 ok then 1155/2011 now Haswells , gez just make up ur mind intel and pick one socket for heavens sake

Splendid
The original question was which is better for "future proofing" and to answer that question the 3930k is byfar the better option. Its core per core value is stronger then ivy and bosts 2 more cores with 4 extra mb of l3 cache then the 3770k. The 3930k benchs higher in all regards and suppourts things such as quad channel memory which even further future proofs this platform.

Depends on what you want to spend in reality. Past an I5 (which can be overclocked like a beast) the price to performance ratio is pretty bleak. Yes an I7 is 10~15% faster and does have some performance benefits, but is it worth the approx 33% price increase, not to mention the 3930K price is even more. I can see you wanting to buy the best processor to stay ahead of the curve, that would be the I5 right now.
HOWEVER! The big thing here is 1 CPU (3770K) is LGA 1155 and the other (3930K) is LGA2011. LGA2011 is the ultra high end performance system systems and have the benefit of 8 RAM slots, 2-3 full 16x PCI xpress slots and cost more. People who I have built these systems for are creating multiple virtual enterprise systems, SharePoint Server farms, things of that nature. These are business professionals willing to build a 2.5K system (at cost).
I agree with the previous posters, get an I5 (or I7-3770K) with an LGA1155 motherboard. Save your money for a better GPU and SSD. Those will give you way better bang for your buck. Also, pick up a NVidea if you are doing rendering and use that CUDA core.
