Decent PCI-E or external video capture device for recording PC gameplay at 720p or 1080p for under $100.

Ok so first my specs:

Sapphire 7850 2gb
i5 2500k
8gb G. Skill DDR3 ram
Gigabyte Z77-D3H mobo
CM Hyper 212+ cooler
Antec BP550 psu
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

Now, for the question. I posted a few places and I keep getting different answers. Some people say just to use FRAPS, while others say Dxtory, and others say MSI Afterburner, But nobody lists the hardware alternatives. I know people use them. I know people spend good money on them. I have trouble with FRAPS, Bandicam, and I've never used the others. But I always seem to take a big hit in performance with the other programs, so I wanted to try to see if there is an alternative route.

Now, I need to say I built this in August and since haven't actually installed the programs, which I will in a bit to test. I've mostly been focused on playing instead of recording, and now I'd like to get back into my Youtube channel full of various gameplay footage. I ran a 5770 with and AMD Athlon II X4 620 before, so that might be why I took the fps hits.

But why do people with really nice systems resort to expensive or mid-range priced cards and device if FRAPS is so amazing?

The other thing is, I always had to jump through hoops to edit videos. I had to use Windows Live Movie Maker to compress the raw footage from FRAPS and Bandicam, and then convert it in AVS for Youtube. I would like to learn better ways to do this, and it seems like people have their trade secrets that they don't want to share.

I don't want to stream, I just want to capture footage, make cool videos, perhaps montages and stuff, and I don't really care about 1080p. It's be nice, but 720p or 1080i is fine.

If FRAPS really is better, then fine. But I really would like any kind of info on the devices, and maybe see what the difference is, if any. Are there benefits to FRAPS, besides no hardware? Are there benefits to the devices?

Any help would be great, thank you.

Im surprised no one has answered this. I also take a huge performance hit when using fraps. For example ill go from 80-100 fps to around 35 maybe 40. I bought a computer from staples instead of being smart and just building one. I have heard of many people using two hard drives for fraps. One hard drive that saves all your games and the other one that is just for the videos you record with fraps. I think they have to be 2 internal hard drives like western digital caviar blacks or just the normal blue one. Apparently thats supposed to help out a lot but i do not have the means to test that please don't quote me. As for an external solution i recommend the Avermedia live gamer portable. Its got good reviews and it wont drop your fps while your recording. Its not under 100 bucks but with Cyber Monday coming up you might be able to get a good discount on it.
