I have seen some pretty good results using the A8 or A10/6670 combo, but like everyone says 1 bigger card is better…. This is just a theory question, is the 30 bucks or so savings worth it, and why either way?

It's not worth saving.
Why?
Because 7770 will smoke out of the way A8 apu + 6670 crossfire by a mile. Even 7750 is better option by 25-30% maybe.

Also FX-6300 is good enough to meet full requirements of modern games. FX-6300 + 7770 and you are going to play Crysis 3 and BF3 on nice settings with solid FPS. With A8 + 6670 i'm affraid you won't.

Personally, I would avoid using the A8-5600K or even the A10-5800K in dual graphics mode with a Radeon HD 6670. The headaches associated with using the two cards together are not worth the expense. The second system, while slightly more expensive, will provide better results and is way more upgradeable.

I have never done a sli or crossfire set up, are there really that many issues related to it or is it simply the lowend nature of these cards? The reason I ask is that in theory (or at least in myhead) it seems like such a good idea to combine the two. Would there be any time that a APU + lower end GPU be the "right" set up? Like HTPC or something like that?

HTPC can run wiht APU only, no need for discreete card. Only good option for this would be in some laptops with A8 and 7670 card to get few FPS more. But generally speaking, APU+discrete video is to weak to compete with anything normal these days. Maybe in future such option will give better results but for now there is no point really.
And yes, crossfire gives headaches in most games. Only advised option for SLI/Crossfire is basically when you need multimonitor setup.
