In the process of deleting an old OS on a separate HD, I deleted my MBR for my primary Windows OS. I pretty sure I've manage to repiar my MBR with the lilo utility from an Ubuntu 10.04 disk, but when I tried to boot it said there was no Active Partition.

When I took a look at the disk in Ubuntu it says that it's all unallocated space and there is no partition.

I'm not sure if it got deleted or Ubuntu isn't reading it properly but I'm sure my data is still there.

Please tell me I don't have to create a new partition and overwrite my OS ^_^

Solution

No it wont, but there is a work around.

1. Put the disk in your computer and boot from it. When you get the select language screen, Shift+F10.

2. Type diskpart, then list disk after diskpart is loaded.

4. Type select disk [number of the disk the partition is on].

5. Type list partition, followed by select partition [partition number].

6. Type active.

Reboot your computer and remove the disk and you are all done!

Which version of windows are you running, and do you have the disk for it?

I'm running Windows 7x64 on the OS I'm trying to recover. I do not have the disk at the moment (tried to burn one earlier at a friends, but his drive was being weird), but I'm sure I can get one. Will a standard windows repair actually fix it?

Hopefully it will read the "unallocated space" as a proper partition. I'll let you know how it works out tomorrow when I can get my hands on a disk. Thanks man.
