I own this one: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=57498&vpn=TL-WN822N&manufacture=TP%20Link

It's much better than any D-link/Linksys product i've tried (high gain antenna really work) i was at 75% signal before at 1st floor and now i'm in the basement when the router is on the second floor and 100% signal all the time from this device and 43% on a D-link DWA-140 so it's really a good unit for a low price like that...

Solution
a bit more info might help

like how far from the router you are

whats between you and the router--ie brick walls or plasterboard--sheetrock i think its called in some countries

an adapter with removable antenna is always a good idea

then you can always put on a high gain antenna like a yagi or biquad if its needed

Sorry for the lack of info. Didnt really know what to post. Im on second story about 3-4m directly above the router (Think its a wood floor). Space on my mb: 2 x PCI Express 2.0 x1 slots and 2 x PCI slots. Budget is about max 60 NZ but I am not against spending more if it can be justified.

Is it worth getting and internal card over an external usb one like spawnkiller suggested?

personally i prefer usb ones

pci ones the case can block the signal

usb ones you can stick on a 3 foot or 6 foot usb cable or whatever length you want to allow positioning them

where you want usb ones can also come with removable antenna

you shouldnt have much bother though being so close to the router

alfa make all sorts of wifi equipment

including usb ones

like these

http://www.alfa.com.tw/product_category.php?pc=3

they usually have 5db gain but you can remove the antenna to put even higher gain on if you want

with my laptop and the alfa and a home made biquad antenna i can sit out in the garden and still get 5 bar

reception--in fact i can go sit in the pub 300 feet away and not in line of sight and still use my home wifi

Cant find any here in NZ D: but the one spawnkiller linked is available and has good reviews :D Now to kill my thread... For the same cost I could buy 20m of ethernet cable. Worth it or not?? Also will be a bitch to get it up stairs lol

Wired is always better than wireless, if you can, do it !!! Wireless is only for convenience but as theorical 300mb/s for "N" and wired is 1000mb/s max (wired can actully it 900+mb/s while Wireless claims 300mb/s but it's at 100% signal, and 1 device on the network...)

For convenience as it's in stairs wireless is still good enough (highest ISP where i am is 200mb/s so 300mb/s on "N" is enough for now)

Yes i really love my Xonar, really worth it if you have a good speaker or headset (100$+) you'll notice an enormous difference and people that said onboard is good enough obviously never had a dedicated sound card ;) That said if you have a 20$ headset or cheap speakers, you'll probaly never see the difference...
