My laptop is Dell inspiron N7110; intel core-i72630QM CPU 2GHz; 8GB RAM possibly DDR3 with no additional graphics card; only the built in one......some games that require about 512 MB RAM doesn't always load smoothly....lags at some points.....is it normal? Please help...Also my monitor is about 17"

Solution
If it is like a pulsing fade it sounds like too much power is being drawn from the system some how. On my wife's N7110 I have used a cooling pad as well as an external HDD powered by USB while on battery and the only time that the screen dims is when the power is disconnected, but that is a power saving option that can be changed, as I said before though if it is glowing then it sounds like a problem with the battery not delivering enough power.

They get pretty hot, I would use something like Open Hardware Monitor to get a reading of your system temps, mine idles at around 45 Degrees for the CPU and GPU, at load the CPU reaches high 70's and GPU into the 80's. (Celsius BTW) take some compressed air to vents and ensure they are free of...

You could have a bazillion gigs of RAM and your game will still be choppy.

The problem is that your using a on board graphics card. If you want to see some REAL performance, get a discrete card.

Be prepared to spend upwards of $120 for a semi decent card.

Sigh...someone told me that 8GB RAM is enough with built in graphics.....well thanks for the advice but could you please be more specific about the card? A 1GB card would be enough right? Will it be a hassle to install a graphics card in a laptop?

Oh, i apologize. I didn't see that it was a laptop.

That laptop comes with two graphics cards. The intel one and the discrete level Nvidia one. It sounds like the wrong one is selected.
Do you know how to access the optimus control panel?

If not, check out this tutorial http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3519/t/19405027.aspx

That is the same laptop that my wife has, I am not sure if Dell has upgraded the GPU recently, or maybe removed it all together, but her laptop has a GT 525m, don't expect much from the GT 525m. It is definitely better then the integrated graphics but if you want to get some decent frame rates you will be limited to low settings on newer more demanding games.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions...but I don't see the nVidia control panel anywhere, the nVidia card doesn't even show in the device manager. This laptop was formatted once totally; could it be that the card was not installed without the proper CD? In that case...boohooo; someone else did the whole setup thing since I screwed up trying to partition the hard drive by myself....I've been using this for a whole year without the graphics card!!!

Go here Dell Support and put in the systems service tag, it should be on the bottom of the laptop and be 7 characters long. If you are lucky you can click on system configuration and find out what should be in your system, from there you can download drivers. However the device manager should still pick it up and install a generic driver or get one through windows update.

In the event that the service tag is missing you can try to click Detect Service Tag. I think this only works if you are using IE.

I think there were some versions of the n7110 that did not include a GPU, that may be the case with yours.

Go here http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/Product/inspiron-17r-n7110#

Scroll all the way to the bottom, click on Video, then download the one that says
nVidia GeForce GT 435M, GeForce GT 420M, GeForce GT 445M, Stereoscopic 3D, GeForce GT 525M, N12E-GE-B(LP)-GT 550M, N12E-GE-B ( GT555M), GeForce GT 540M, v.8.17.12.6721, A07

Try installing that.

There are basically two versions of the Dell Inspiron 17R (N7110). One comes with the nVidia GT 525m graphics card and the other solely relies on the Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics core.

It seems the version you have does not come equipped with the nVidia GT 525m. Therefore, you are relying on the Intel HD 3000 to play games. Decent enough for non graphic intensive games at 1366x768 with low or a mix of low and medium graphic settings.

Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do to improve gaming performance... short of buying a new laptop. If you later decide that you want to buy a laptop capable of playing games reasonably well, then come back and create a new topic.

Sounds like you have one of the models without a discreet GPU, in that case you just have to deal with the integrated graphics or get a new system.

Well technically there is another option, although not a good one at all: I know some systems use MXM modules for the GPU, my Inspiron One 2320 does for its 525m, not sure about the laptops that use a 525m, and since your system did not come equipped with a GPU the motherboard may not even support MXM modules anyway, plus its a pain and expensive so I would not look into that option.

I understand what you're trying to say but how come my Dell resource CD is detectng the discrete nVidia card?

Thanks a lot. Looks like you were correct; I did not detect any in the Bios. Also, thanks a lot everyone for your help. I'm a occasional game player; not addicted to it. The next time I buy a laptop; should I consider one with a decent graphics card or a decent SSD? Seems like a trade off for HP envy series ultrabooks......btw since you have an experience with this Dell one; if it doesn't bother you much I'd like to ask another question. Is it supposed to heat up like a stove??? I'm using a cooling fan; when I switch to battery the display kinda starts fading and glaring. When I take the cooling fan USB plug off from the laptop the display gets a bit better. Is this normal? Thanks again.

For being an occasional game player, as I am, I would personally go with a discreet GPU in the system. You will find yourself saved from the frustration of wanting to fire up a game now and then only to find you cannot run it or it performs terrible. You can always add an SSD later on down the road but 99% of the time you cannot add a video card to a laptop.

I know it is but the country I live in suffers from frequent power outage....plus I live with my dad; so I don't have a lot of space. That's why I bought a laptop. :(
