New rig. Disappointed with WoW Performance. Tweaks? Help?

Hello.

I just built a brand new computer (stats in my sig). I've done minimal overclocking to it, just a 10% preset in bios and I'm finding that my WoW performance is lacking. If I turn on ultra, I get at best 35-40 FPS and it's choppy.

Are there any performance tweaks that you suggest I perform in order to boost my gaming experience? I am thinking about purchasing a 120 - 144 hz monitor and lowering my graphic settings to get a smoother play. Are there features enabled in Windows 7 that could be holding me back? I have done the standard services tweaks, disabled indexing, and things of that nature.

In WoW, I run Full screen, V Sync disabled, and lowered my Shadow quality. I'm not sure what else to do. I really feel like I should be getting better performance out of my game.

Mind you, I know that WoW isn't the best coded game out there. BUT I'm sure there are tweaks out there that could help boost my performance regardless.

Please don't respond with WoW is awful. Play something else. Nothing you can do. =)

I'm excited and eagerly await input. Thanks guys.

With all settings on Ultra on a heavily o/c i7 3550k and amd 7950 I would see fps in the 55-70 range for questing areas. I would advice just playing with wow settings a bit to get yourself higher fps, some settings like shadows, light shafts, and a couple other things can give a big fps boost by just bringing down one notch.

I'm running at native resolution (1920 x 1200) and it shouldn't be overheating. I have 4 tower fans, and that beastly heatsink fan. I can test that but I have a feeling its driver / software related.

I have. I'm still looking for more.

Especially because I am trying to stream as well and that... for some reason... kills my game. I get a steady 40-50 fps while streaming yet it's wicked choppy. Unsure why. I'm not killing it with a high bitrate either.

I have a proper heatsink / fan, but anything past that 10% overclock, causes my computer to boot to a black screen and not work until I take the battery out of the mobo.

How do i properly overclock my CPU further? I need an easy, noob proof way.

I don't see any obvious reasons for slow downs in your rig unless you're running a multi-monitor resolution or have a 2560x1440/1600 monitor. Seeing as 1080p seems to be about standard, I'll presume you're using that.

First, I would ask if you're running WoW in DX11 mode. Simply open the Advanced Options and make sure the DirectX API is set to 'DirectX 11'.

Next, I would ensure you're running the 64-bit WoW client. That might take some google searching as I've forgotten how you get that, it may even be included now with recent patches.

If the slowdowns are in cities, I'd say that's normal. Cities in WoW can be particularly brutal, not necessarily from the visuals, but the swarm of network traffic. Even people with seriously monster rigs experience a degree of slowdown in cities. It's pretty normal.

When I played WoW with my rig, it held steady on Ultra everything at 60 FPS. On occasion it did dip down to 45 ish when there were tons of people around casting crap.

Even though WoW is old, there are a TON of effects and stuff going on, which puts systems to work. Just lower a few settings, mostly draw distances.

I'm running 64-bit client w/ Direct x11. I know that for sure. I lowered my shadow quality as stated in my OP.

I really want to learn how to overclock my cpu and gpu properly without overdoing it. I believe why I was getting a black screen was a lack of voltage to my cpu when I pushed it past 15%. I should be able to get at least 4.2 ghz out of it, considering its advertised on the box ;P.

Any tips?

That's what I'm talking about. I upped the multiplier to 20% and I black screen.

I like how the OP is ignoring everyone saying "WoW is a demanding game and people with monster rigs even have slow downs". Your system is doing fine for above average, with that game. Lower your settings ( Like I said, draw distances and effects)

I'm not ignoring this. I spent the money so I could have the settings on the higher end. I have lowered the view distance and lighting effects as said, but I was hoping there were other options to improve performance... such as editing your graphic card settings.

I've read that anti-aliasing can really slow down performance.

Chances are the reason you're getting a Black Screen when you OC too far is that you're only adjusting the multiplier. Past a certain point (seemingly the 10% OC you're using for instance) you'll need to give the processor more voltage to run at the higher speeds you're asking of it. Applying additional voltage increases stability at higher speeds. Look up 'AMD FX Overclocking Guide' or something of the sort and you should have all the information you need. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar enough with the FX-series and its voltages to give you a recommendation.

Should I push the voltage by .1 volts at a time? What's a general rule of thumb?

I'm trying to figure out how to edit these bios settings properly.

Whenever I choose a preset overclock value, for ex: 20% 4200 mhz, it changes my CPU freq. mhz and increases it.

So, what values do I start changing? Here's the options

Cpu Freq:
Cpu Voltage
NB Freq voltage (what is this)
CPU NB voltage (what is this)

AMD Turbo is on auto
Power management auto
Spread spectrum auto etc.

What values should I tinker with, etc.

I notice that when I push the CPU past 4.0 ghz, the computer will boot but when I check in CPU-Z, the processor won't budge past 3.5 (stock). I did push it to 4.0 ghz stable, but I want more.
