Hey guys, I am new to this site and I was doing an upgrade from 6gb Ram (3x2 sticks) to 12 GB (3x4) sticks. When I check my system properties, it shows 12GB installed but only 5.27 usable. I didn't have this issue when I was running the 6 GB. Any help would greatly be appreciated, thanks.

When you installed the new ram did you unplug the power supply? After putting in the new ram did you reset the bios? Tell us what your process was when you did the upgrade step by step, it will help us to understand exactly what you did and what you now need to do.

I did not reset the BIOS but I do believe I turned off the power supply. It was around 2 AM and I was in zombie mode so I could have possibly forgotten to do that, but I doubt it. Just in case I did, please give solutions to each issue. Thanks,

What you can do is shut down and unplug the power supply from the wall, then remove the cmos battery from the MB and push the power on button for 30 sec that will release the built up voltage in the caps.
Then put the battery back in , plug in the power supply and power up, see if now you can see all 12gb of ram available. By leaving the power supply plugged in and not resetting the bios your computers bios is still thinking it has 6gb of ram and Windows is seeing the ram but because the bios only see 6gb it's only reporting 5.7gb usable.
If your motherboard has a cmos reset button on it you can use that instead of unplugging and removing the battery.

If the motherboard has 6 memory slots and your only using three then you should try putting the three sticks in the other three slots to see if you get the same thing.
What you can also try is to remove the three sticks and put one in the slot that is recommended for one stick. Then try that same stick in each of the three slots that you currently have occupied and if all three say that you have 4gb then try the next stick and then the last one to verify that your getting 4gb in each slot with each stick.
After doing this then put in all three sticks like you have it now and see if it's still the same. If no change then download and run Memtest86 and run the test with the three sticks (12gb) and see what the test result is.
