Building her now..can't wait to load the OS, apps and test. System config:

Case: CoolerMaster CM Storm Series Trooper
Motherboard: Asus Rampage IV Extreme 64GB
CPU: Core i7-3930K Sandy- E. I'll OC it to a 4.8GHz target or better starting with a CPU ratio of 48 @1.35v ($570)
RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum 32GB (4x8) DDR3 2400 XMP Mode
MD32GX3M4A22400C10 Quad Channel 1.65v Quad Channel 0-12-12-31
PSU: Corsair AX1200i modular
Cooler: Corsair H100i Hydro
DVD BR: Two LG Blue Ray 14x Rewriters
SSDs: Pair of Samsung 840 Pro 512GB SSD in RAID 0 with TRIM enabled (OS/Apps/Scratch)
DATA HDDs: Four Seagate 3TB Sata III Baracuda HDDs in RAID 10
CF/SD/SDXC Internal Reader: Uspeed USB3.0 3.5" multi card reader
Display Card: 2GB Sapphire Toxic HD 5850 (Reusing existing 5850 for now - very good card, but plan to upgrade to a pair of Firepro V7900's in CrossFire soon)
OS: Win 8 64-bit Professional with Classic Shell to boot straight into Windows Classic user interface and enhanced Start button

Planned Upgrades:

ADDT'L RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum 32GB (4x8) DDR3 2400 XMP Mode (I use between 36GB regularly and occasionally more for my kind of work)
Replacement Video: ATI FirePro V7900 2GB DDR5 30-bit Graphic Card in Crossfire
Monitor: Dell UltraSharp 30" 30-bit U3014 30" 30-bit Monitor. Currently using a pretty good 24" display but want the 30-bit and wider gamut with CS6)

One thing I am still uncertain of is when I load the OS if I have to manually load the RAID driver before the OS install. The Rampage user guide says to install the RAID driver for Windows Vista and later, but nothing specific about Win 8. it says:

To create a RAID driver disk in Windows®:
1. Start Windows®.
2. Plug the USB floppy disk drive and insert a floppy disk.
3. Place the motherboard support DVD into the optical drive.
4. Launch Windows File Manager and locate the following path in the support DVD:
\Drivers\RAID\RSTe\Driver
Double-click AsMakeDisk.exe to launch the ASUS MakeDisk Utility.
5. Select the USB floppy disk drive as the destination disk.
6. Follow the succeeding screen instructions to complete the process.

The hen it says:

To install the RAID driver for Windows® Vista or later OS:
1. During the OS installation, click Load Driver to allow you to select the installation media containing the RAID driver.
2. Insert the USB flash drive with RAID driver into the USB port or the support DVD into the optical drive, and then click Browse.
3. Click the name of the device you’ve inserted, go to Drivers > RAID, and then select the RAID driver for the corresponding OS version. Click OK.
4. Follow the succeeding screen instructions to complete the installation.

I recall doing this using a copy off a USB Floppy I had made when building my i7-920 system with a pair of Intel X25M 256GB SSDs in RAIDo - I guess with Win8 this step is still necessary?

Mike

LOL, Cyanide, yah, right, with liquid nitro. I'll be happy if I can OC it to 4.8 at or under 75c using Prime 95 for 8 hours stable. I took my i7-920 to 4.0GHz and have had it there for over 2 years now on an i100 cooler. Under max stress that CPU never broke 72c.

The beast is now fully assembled and up and running. Loading the OS....will OC and update my results.

Mike

The beast is now built and loaded with Win8 Pro, all patches, and the MOB drivers and utilities along with several apps including Photoshop CS6 and benshmarking apps. I've OCed the 3930 pretty easily to 4.6GHz with an the temps on Core 1 around 71c (spiked to 73 early on but stayed at 71 as the peak under long stress test, with the other 5 cores peeking in the upper 60's - averaging around 67c using the Corsair H100i cooler. I didn't do much except set the multiplier to 46 and Vcore at 1.325v and its been rock stable even under long blended Prime95 and SmalFTT tests. I didn't want to use BCLK to keep from affecting other components. I did set a few things in the BIOS such a LLC to High
and I OCed by all cores rather than by individual core, but if Core 1 continues to run hotter than the others when I shoot for 4.8GHz or 5GHz I might set them individually to keep Core 1 below my temp target threshold which is 75c.

I am still loading SW so will try for 4.8 and 5.0 when I get more time. I have a pretty good starter list of BIOS parameters to change when pushing the envelope and will post those when I do. So far, so good. The only problem I had was that Memtest showed two of the four Dominator Platinum 2400 sticks had some errors, so I have to RMA the set and will use a 12GB Dominator 1600 6 stick kit I have from a prior machine while I wait for NewEgg to replace the 32GB Dominator Platinum 2400 sticks - I expected 4 good sticks for premium memory like that - grrrrr.

Will post benchmarks soon, but the twin Samsung 840 Pro 512GB SSD in RAID 0 are showing sustained read over 1GB/sec and sustained write at just under 1GB/sec. The quad 3TB Seagate Barracudas in RAID 10 are also showing well. I have a hex editor and a pretty easy procedure I have yet to run to test and make sure TRIM is working as expected - I did need to load the RAID driver before loading Win8 Pro and the MOB drivers before Win 8 saw the RAID 10 array.

More to come soon

Regards,
Mike

Sounds like your computer is running awesomely! Sorry to hear about the ram but it could happen to anyone :p Your SSD's look awesome! Also why do you need 13TB of space? And again an awesome build!

It i actually 12TB of disk with only 6TB available after putting them in RAID10 (1+0), which provides both striping and redundancy :)

I have massive amounts of image files - already over 3TB worth.

I don't know but much about RAID so I'll just accept that :p

3TB of images O.O I couldn't get 3TB of videos if I tried!
