AMD or Intel?

I'm switching up my desktop a bit, deciding to spend more money, but I want to know if I should make the switch to Intel? I'm currently going to get one of these these graphics cards Radeon 7850/870, so what would be a good Intel processor that would go well with that (I heard i5's perform quite well)? I don't want to spend a thousand dollars on an i7 Extreme either :).
If I should just stick to AMD, I have a Phenom II X4 840 (3.2GHZ Quad Core), give me an upgrade to buy, or something like that. Thanks!

Some of the games I'm playing or planning on playing in the future (if it helps):

Bioshock Infinite
Skyrim
Oblivion
League of Legends
Saints Row (2/3)
Battlefield 3
Fallout 3
...

The newest FX series chips will be fine for those games, if your CPU is currently AM3+, then upgrading to a FX series would be a great idea for you and far more cost effective than buying intel CPU + Mobo.

Plus steamroller is coming out next year, so you could always upgrade down the road...it will be coming to the same socket! Intel on the other, is changing sockets for Haswell, so your upgrade path is dead there without an overhaul build.

Depends , if your X4 is not slowing you down at the moment you leave it as is
can your board take a AMD FX cpu at all? if so could be an easy upgrade Path

If you do want to go Intel , depending on your budget any of the mainstream i5 cpu's will do the job
i5-3470 / i5-3570 / i5-3570k
The i5-3570k is the most reconmended one as it's overclockable with a good CPU cooler

Well I was planning on upgrading my mobo anyway, just because it's extremely bad. Umm I think I'll see if my new card gives it a pretty bad bottleneck, and if so, I'll just stick with AMD for now, thanks guys.

Your Phenom may bottleneck a HD 7870...it might not bottleneck the HD 7850, that will likely depend on the game you're playing. You can get a FX6300 for $129 right now, and you could get an Asrock 970 extreme3 for about $75 or the Asus M5A97 for similar money...putting you out $200 for CPU + MoBo, and that would be a pretty effective upgrade if you're replacing your MoBo anyway.
