Hi,
I have a Wired Router DSL DLINK 502T which is connected to 2 computers through a switch. I have been using this configuration for a long time (about 4 years) without any issues. Recently though, the internet connection becomes unresponsive for a while, and then again gets back to normal. This happens frequently, whenever I try to access the internet. The LED lights indicating the network status on modem doesn't show any issues and continue to light up normal. I am unable to diagnose whether the issue is with my internet provider or with my modem (as my modem is very old). If I could get some help from anyone here, I may be able to decide whether to replace my modem if it is faulty or ask the internet provider if his connection is faulty.

So in short how do I investigate whether the above issue is related to modem or ISP.

thanks,
Nirvan

Normally, if your ISP is only providing the modem, while you're providing the router, the recommendation would be to remove the router and directly connect the PC to the modem (thus eliminating the router as a possible culprit). But when you have an "all in one" device (modem+router), that's obviously not an option.

If the ISP provided the device, you should work w/ them to diagnose the problem. OTOH, if *you* provided the device, the only thing the ISP is going to do is verify the DSL line. And they should be willing to do that if asked. If they claim the DSL line is fine, there's not a lot you can do other than try a replacement. Of course, you could try changing out the phone line and ethernet cables first just to make sure it’s not that.

Realize that these devices do have a limited lifespan, and do fail from time to time. They actually take a lot more punishment than ppl realize, given then run 24/7, use cheap components, and may not be particularly well ventilated. Or it may have simply been subjected to a surge recently that did some damage.

I have contacted the ISP and am working with them to know why the internet connection drops. At present, I have been asked to modify the DNS servers list in my pc. Seems to be working alright till now.

Thanks for the help.
