Thinking about an AMD Phenom II X4 965

So I`m wanting to get rid of my MSI laptop and just switch to a desk and make my own build but Im stuck if I should get the
AMD Phenom II X4 965 or the newer FX Series the motherboard I picked out supports AM3/AM3+

I currently have an Intel i7 2.3ghz quad in my laptop. Would I notice a Decrease with the
AMD Phenom II X4 965? Or should I go with the FX? I read a lot that the
AMD Phenom II X4 965 was faster than the fx-4100 and so on.

I'd either go with the Phenom II 965 or an FX-6300 (there's no real advantage to a 4300 and a 4100 will be worse than a 965).

The i7 is far better than the 965BE. The 965BE is a 3 year old CPU. Get the fx-6300. Its not too expensive and considerably better than both the 965BE and fx-4100.

None of these will really be any better than the i7.

I know the 965 is older, But would it be worth it to choose the FX-6300 over the 965? I read A LOT about the FX not being true quadcore or sixcore like the 965

Yes this is true. The 6300 is still much better than the 965be. Depending on what you are using the machine for, core count won't make a difference at all.

The performance of a piledriver CPU is roughly equivalent to a phenom II (although it seems to fair better in some games).

You would be better off to go with the FX-6300. Piledriver fixed most of bulldozers' flaws so gaming performance is much better.

I`ll be Playing MineCraft/Running Minecraft sever with a few players at the same time. World of Warcraft and Video editing which would sometimes max out my i7 in my laptop

I have a 890 mbo because the cpu went bad. This last weekend Newegg sold the 965 for $85 so I bought one.I would have gone for a FX6300 but I would have had to get a working cpu and up grade the mobo to make with it work with am3+. I use the 965 and keep the mobo update so it will work with future amd cpus.

You should be comparing the fx 6300 to the fx4300 instead of the last generation 4100. In terms of gaming there will be little to no difference as the 4300 already has 4 cores and not many games if any at all take full advantage of the 6 cores 6300 (let alone can stress all of them).

In terms of stock gaming performance the 965be and fx 4300 they should be on par for gaming as well. Though for straight budget gaming at stock speeds I go with the i3 3220, it consistantly outperformed or on par with AMD's offerings. Keep in mind they used a GTX 680 to try to show the CPU limitations, chances are you won't get that drastic of a difference.

If your doing anything CPU intensive besides gaming though I recommend at least the 6300, or more preferably the 8320 and OC them, this is assuming you wanted to go the budget route. If you had money I go with the 3570k or 3770k and OC.

The FX 6300 is better because it has better clock for clock performance, the 6200 uses more power because of architectural differences.

You'll sacrifice too much single threaded performance, the 6300 is a better way to go.

Thanks! 2 last things haha. What Power Supply should I get? ive seen so many bad reviews even with the top brands. I just dont want to overspend like i think im doing. And the 2nd thing I play WoW and minecraft a lot what graphics card $150 or less be best for ultra settings? im used to Nvidia but never tried any Radion stuff.

You will probably need more than $150 for ultra settings, even in wow. Try to get an hd 7850. It will play at high settings.

Get a 500w PSU from Antec, XFX, Corsair, or Seasonic.

You were not at 1080p. At 1080p a gtx650 will get you low settings.

Yea 1080p on my laptop screen and 23inch lcd. I would get between 30-40 fps on ultra

I find that hard to believe. I can tell you, in modern games that are more GPU intensive (WOW is CPU intensive) a gtx650 will get you low settings. I used to have a 7770 (slightly better than a gtx650) And at 1080p, games would run at medium settings.

Heck my friends laptop i bought for him only has a gt540m and it plays wow on Medium very well. Also my moms asus laptop i bought for her has a 610m and it does very well too.
