Is their really a difference between oem and the retail besides oem being locked to one pc and not have both the 64 and the 34 bit. Also 64 is the preferd route either way?

Yes, it is. According to Microsoft it is intended for PCs that are built by a shop or company and that do not already have an operating system. But it's much cheaper than the full retail edition.

With the upgrade, if you wipe your hard drive, you cannot reinstall without jumping through hoops and doing a work around that involves installing your old microsoft OS then upgrading, or doing a double install of the upgrade edition basically. Technically it is also a no no per license agreement. That and if you do a CLEAN install (no upgrade) it will not activate because it looks for the old windows files from the OS you are upgrading.

It's legal for you to buy OEM with qualifying hardware and do a clean install, it'll also let you upgrade (at least on 7).

So say if I buy oem off of newegg and I build my pc from scratch then it would install without any problems and I would never be able to install it on another pc and I would either have to buy the retail version or another oem copy? If I'm understanding correctly

No prob :) It'll install with no probs and it should work the same if you get 8. You can re install too with no problems. After a whole bunch of re installs (like 10 I think) you used to have to activate over the phone, it's easy though and all automated. I re installed mine already to iron out bugs and get all my software nailed down.

Hi Pdow93...
Well as per the configurations mentioned by you, Windows 7 is best suited. I had searched for your query and came to know that Win 8 is also optimal for the same. But my first preference is Win 7, as i am personally using this for the same configurations.....:)
