I've got a massive problem with heat on my AMD Phenom Cpu, and i was just made aware of it by a friend who told me that my card idling at ~75Celcius was not good at all. And i have ran my card for maybe half a year without noticing untill when i recently bought a Geforce 670ti and i wasnt noticing much of a performance change and i looked into upping my cpu power.

My solution to reducing my idling temperatures to around 40ish degrees celcius was lowering the voltage by alot, but i had to lower it so far that now i cant open any games without instant BSOD. If i up the voltage again i could probably run games but then my idling temp would go back up to 61Celcius.

So far i've ordered some Artic Silver Ceramics paste to see if that does anything.

Anyone have any ideas why my cpu would be running at 75 ish degrees celcius with everything at stock setting? ( i once started up my pc turned Cpu Temp on straight away and had 88Celcius cpu temp.

Any help is appreaciated.

if your temp issues started when you got...

It became dusty, bad airflow, not properly seated, or high ambient temperature....

there a lot of thing that can make the chip run hotter....

btw are u sure the temp is correct? as i remember it had temp limit around 70-75c (it will shut down if it pass that temp)...

The company that built my PC said they could send me another cpu fan for free which would be better than the stock one, i am also going to attempt to redo the thermal pasting and see if the heat sink is mounted properly today, im hoping it will take the heat levels down so i can take my volts back up and actually be able to use my pc for games.

As of right now i had to downvolt it so far that if i start a game it will bluescreen the pc.

And ambient temperatures isnt exactly a problem as i live in norway and its not exactly renowned to be warm here, and if the temperature is correct then i've been running my Phenom at well into 75-80celcius for a long time and its never shut down on me

The stock cooler for the phenoms gets blocked up with dusk really easily, I have had one, I have 2 friends with them, and also my dad runs one. Every 6 months I give them a good blast of compressed air to remove the dust from the fins on the heat sink. Running temps drop by around 20-35oC immediately.
You have to do this regularly or else risk cooking your processor.
The problem isn't too bad if you PC is on a desk, but if it sits on the floor, then this is the most likely cause.
A larger aftermarket fan with wider fin spacing would serve you much better and don't cost to much either!

Quite honestly i have removed dust everwhere in the computer except for the CPU, i will pull the fan off the heatsink and see if i can get some dust out of there. Basically its been collecting dust for over a year atm

if your temp issues started when you got the new GPU, i'd suggest you try the simple solution first. Open the side of your case and stick a room fan in the side of it. If you see more then a 5C drop in temps, you've got an airflow problem in your case. You'll need to fix that first.

-965be, no... Deneb chips in general should not be run over 62C under any circumstance. And while you are using the crappy stock cpu cooler, it's good enough to keep your cpu under 62C at stock settings so this shouldn't be a problem. Which means it's probably not seated properly. Pull the cpu cooler off, clean the contact plate and heat spreader, reapply thermal paste, and try again.

if your computer builder is giving you a new cpu cooler, use it. Anything is better then the stock junk.

by reapply the TIM, and clean the dust is a first step to checking the problems...
but before doing that, can u try ingtar33 suggestion by removing the side case to see if there temp different...

will wait for the update.

I cleaned my heat sink and cpu and reapplied thermic paste, it was a drastic improvement from what i had! I am now looking at getting myself watercooling to fix it once and for all.
Playing BF3 i will get around 64 ish celcius whilst i get an idle temp of aprox 39 celcius

That's still pretty high, especially under load. You need to change out that cooler asap. The safest, max temp for that CPU is 62c. Don't play any BF3 until you get a new cooler. I'm running an h80i closed water cooler with my 965 oced at 4.1ghz and idle is 32c and under load with quiet mode it gets to around 58c with stress testing.

The stock cooler that came with my P2 965 a few years ago was actually pretty darn good. WAAYYY better than any of Intels past/current CPU cooler options. i was actually disturbed by the stock cooling solution that was boxed with my 2600k. It just made the whole product feel like a cheap POS. AMD is so much better than Intel in this department.

Make sure you get all that dust out from the CPU fan and make sure your case has proper cooling. Sometimes a proper housing can drastically drop temperatures.

Fixed all my problems by getting a new CPU cooler, i went from playing BF3 at medium graphic setting at almost 80°c to playing it on ultra at 41°c!

Many thanks to you all for helping me!

Added pic for illustrational purposes on the difference :)
