You'll need a suitable adaptor to use the hard drive in your system - it won't be a SATA one (there are no 15k SATA drives). It'll most likely be either Ultra 320 SCSI (with either a 68-pin Wide SCSI connector or an 80-pin SCA one for use in a hot-swap caddy) or SAS (Serial Attached SCSI), which has a connector that looks much like SATA but isn't compatible.

Performance will be good but probably not stellar.

I use 3 x 15k SCA drives in my PC with a RAID controller; the performance is good but completely eclipsed by the CompactFlash card (!) I use in place of a hard drive in my old laptop (it's impossible to fit a "proper" SSD as it has a 2.5" IDE connector but a 1.8" drive bay). SSDs were too expensive when I built the PC but I plan...

I'd stump up the (fairly modest) amount of extra money to get an SSD if I were you. You'll never want to go back to a hard drive afterwards.

That depends on how it would be interfaced to your pc. As far as I know there are no SATA drives that spin faster than 10k rpm, but still the difference between a standard 7500rpm drive is marginal. As mollets pointed out if it is a SCSI drive you will need a controller etc. You would probably end up paying a bunch of money and not have the speed you were expecting.
The best solution is and always be an SSD!
