Hello, all. Long time lurker first time poster here. I just finished my first build with tons of help from this forum. So, first off, thank you.

Anyway, I am now wondering what to do with my old pre-built system. It's a HP something-or-other with a socket 939 Athlon 64 3800+ (single core), Asus A8N-LA mobo (3 open PCI, and 1 PCI Express x16), 1gb ddr400 cl3 ram, and a small Seagate HDD.

The build/upgrade bug has bitten me after my recent accomplishment, so I was thinking about upgrading this old machine to do some HTPC duty.

I have found a few dual core socket 939 Athlons for cheap on Ebay. I figured I could roll the dice for $15 and slap one of those in there. I would also add another gb of ram, a better PSU, a Blu Ray drive, a 2nd bigger HDD, and a cheap video card.

I just wanted to get some more experienced opinions on whether or not this would be a cost-productive endeavor.

It would be hooked up to a 52" Sharp LCD TV, and I would expect the system to play Blu Rays straight from the disc, as well as rip and store BD and DVD for future viewing.

It might serve as a 2nd PC at times when the wife doesn't feel like working on a laptop, but we really only use MS Office Suite and the web, and since that's what the system did up until last week, I don't see that as a pressing point.

I appreciate any and all help/advice you guys can offer up. Thanks in advance!

I put together an HTPC for the missus and she loves it. Get a remote, install XBMC and you won't regret it... They can be a lot of fun to customise and very nice to use.

Just be aware, once the bug bites you'll catch yourself craving beautiful (and expensive) HTPC cases!

Here's the problem that I see. You spend the money to get this old system up and running. You start using it as an HTPC and come to really enjoy using it. If anything else goes wrong with that system, now you have to scrounge around for more older (and costlier) components. It's a coin toss really. You might get lucky and get several years out of this upgraded system. You might get unlucky and only get a month or so.
