Im currently planning to build a budget gaming pc. So far, ive chosen the core i3 as my cpu. Then a few day ago I saw a build that used an athlon ii x3. If I were to over clock an x2 or maybe unlock cores (what mobos are capable of doing so if its possible), wouldit be just as good as an i3? Maybe even better? I would also like to know if both the i3 and the x2 will bottleneck a saphire radeon 7770 ghz oc edition. Thanks in advance.

the i3 will curb stomp an athlon II x2 or x3, unlocked or otherwise.

to find a comperable amd cpu you'd have to look at the PhII x4 965BE, or an A10-5800k, or an FX 4300... granted all of those are assumed to be overclocked. stock, the i3 will curb stomp them too (the i3 can't overclock). you won't find anything noticeably better then the i3 in AMD's lineup for that price unless you're looking at the FX 6300... which again is assumed to be overclocked (as sadly, stock the i3 still kicks its butt).

not a single cpu i just listed will bottleneck a 7770

Speaking of a10s, i was wondering if if i could use one of those apu processors then use another gpu instead of its integrated one. Would that be possible?

Yes, that is possible. You can also use hybrid Croasfire, using the A10's onboard GPU with a HD6670, but benchmarks show that it's not worth your time.

In terms of what was earlier said about an i3 kicking a stock FX6300's butt, that ain't true. My FX6300 outdoes my brothers i3-3220 everyday, and he has a better GPU than me.
