Hello everyone at Toms!

So.. I am wondering simply if an i7 gives performance benefits for gaming / live streaming at the same time versus the i5.

Ive been trying to find some solid proof / benchmarks. Ive come across many threads where some claim the HTT helps with Streaming but it's always been opinions with no linked reference. I've also seen threads where people claim it makes zero difference and say to go with the i5. I'm sure that it depends on the program being used, but in general. Does anyone have solid evidence to help support a decision?

Thanks!!

@Rex
Ive seen the benches on hyper threading for gaming. I understand that in some cases it's a small increase but in most that it is little to zero advantage.

What I'm wondering is if the hyper threading is going to give a significant performance increase while gaming and STREAMING live at the same time. Or if streaming is so miniscule of a task that it doesn't make a difference. Again.. It could very well depend on the program used to stream and what it takes advantage of. I just haven't been able to find a single benchmark (only forum opinions with no backup data) to give me evidence of one way or another.

Sorry if my question was confusing! having a hard time finding the right terms to search by. Or maybe it just hasn't been benched by anyone that cares to post it :p.

I appreciate your reply regardless :)

It really depends on your budget and the kind of quality you need. Streaming is very CPU-intensive at high resolutions and high FPS.
If you're planning on streaming in HD/60 FPS, go with the i7. If you're ok with slightly lower quality and 30 FPS, you can probably get away with the i5. If cost is no issue, just go with the i7.

Thanks for your response. Again do you have any validation as to how the i7 benefits? Benchmarks something concrete. Generally speaking I would have to agree... that an i7 would be beneficial, but I truly cannot find a single shred of evidence that proves it other then peoples random comments on various forums. And even that seems to be 50/50 for i5/i7.

Maybe I'm asking a question that leaves open to many possibilities. But general speaking, no budget. Lets say the individual has both an i5 and i7 same board same amount of ram etc. Is there going to be a difference in performance either on the quality of the stream, or game play while streaming.

Wished I had the cash to do my own study lol.

I think you hit the nail on the head. There are a lot of different variables to consider: What game are you playing, what quality are you streaming at, what software are you using to stream it, what OS are you running, etc, etc.

While it's true that I don't have any benchmarks or hard evidence, I can say that I know professional gamers who stream at 1080p/60 FPS, and they have said that an i5 won't cut it for streaming at that type of quality. Most of them are using xsplit, if that helps any.

It does and thanks again for your responses. Hopefully some day Tom's might throw this into the benches when comparing CPUS again. As it's becoming more and more common for the avg gamer to be streaming live.
