Hi, I'm soon upgrading my PC, and am wondering whether to go with AMD or Intel.
My current gaming specs is as followed:

Intel E8100 3.0GHz X2
8GB DDR3 1333MHz
ASUS Radeon HD7770 GHz Edition
MSI G41M-P28 Motherboard
WD 320GB HDD

Currently, I get around 40-70 FPS average on most games, some games (PlanetSide etc.) I can't run at all. I think my CPU is bottlenecking my graphics, but I want to upgrade everything to this:

AMD FX-6100 CPU / Intel i5 3470 CPU
16GB DDR3 1333MHz
2 X Asus Radeon HD7770 (Crossfire)
Asrock 970 Extrem3 Socket AM3+ / ASUS 1155 P8H67 Motherboard
WD 1TB HDD

I don't know whether to go with an Asrock 970 Extreme3 and AMD FX-6100, or an ASUS 1155 P8H67 and the i5 3470. I'm not really to interested in overclocking, so the i5 isn't a problem. I'm willing to spend around £50-80 on a motherboard, and around £100 on an AMD processor (they're cheaper :p) or £160 on an Intel. Thanks!

games are beginning to use quad cores....?? years ago. now games are multi threaded and that will increase as time goes by.

I wouldn't waste time running xfire and wouldn't run it with low/medium cards. Save your money to get a "bigger" card and just use the single card you have until you can.

what operating system and monitor size/res?

now here comes some crazy talk. if you had an upper performing 775 quad core it would probably be faster than AMD, except for the 8k series processors.

but to save money and make your build possible you should stick with it ( AMD ) unless you want to add to your budget.

I'm biased only because of the last few years of benchmarking tests done on Intel / AMD. But, if you want the best performance for a long, long time (out of those two) go for the Intel. Core for core, Intel is a lot faster than AMD, and games are just starting to utilize quad cores only now.

That's my .02 cents

Edit: The saying of "you get what you pay for" is THE MOST truthful in the computer world. (not counting sales / promotions).

Thanks a lot! I was originally going to get the AMD, but realized I had the money for an i5! I guess I'll be getting the i5 then, thanks!

When on a budget the FX-6300 (Trinity) can't be beat. Skip the older 6100.
Either FX-6300 or i5-3470 would be a big improvement processor wise.

I don't see a need to up the RAM capacity really. Could put that to a better vcard.

FX-6300 + HD 7870
