I have a Razer BoomerSpeed (Razer Boomslang 2100dpi), and I have been having issues with vertical cursor movement. I will move the mouse downwards, and, sometimes, the cursor will cease further downward movement. Cleaning the mouse did not fix the problem, and I've taken apart the casing to see what is causing the problem. I've tested the mouse without the top case, and have deduced that this happens when the ball is losing contact with the axle, as the opto-wheel is not spinning. I have tried two other trackballs, including the one it came with (I had replaced the original ball with one from another mouse because of a different issue), and none of them have resolved this issue. Horizontal movement has been unaffected.

When you say "ball mouse" do you mean instead of a laser under, its an old school ball? I tried one of those again for about 5 minutes last year and I wanted to rip my hair out lol. Grab a 10 dollar optical mouse, it will even be better than that ball mouse.

I believe you are talking about an optical trackball. On optical trackballs, the axle is generally for support and movement of the ball and usually have little to do with the movement of the cursor. It's touch to the axle isn't important, or required. it sounds like one of the optical sensors is not functioning or is blocked by something. look more closely at finding the sensors and trying to clean them instead of the axles. If a sensor is damaged, your trackball may be hosed.

It is an opto-mechanical mouse. There is a ball and two perpendicular axles just like a mechanical mouse, but the axles each rotate an opto-wheel, which is a transparent wheel with light holes. There are sensors beside the opto-wheels that emit infrared light through the opto-wheel, and pick up on changes in the returned light. More can be found here.
