Should I upgrade phenom x4 840

You will get a bit of an improvement, because it is 200mhz faster and has L3 cache but not too much. The only reason to upgrade to this would be to overclock it and get to 3.8-4.0Ghz causing an actually decent improvement of frame rates. Other options might be a 1090T or 1100T if you can find them but for most games it won't make that much of a difference unless you overclock them as well. What motherboard are you using because if it supports the FX8320 or FX8350 which would actually make decent difference in games at stock speed.

Keep what you have at the moment and overclock it to kingdom come. Like others have said you wont see much of a difference with the 965 at stock speeds, and the 1090t and 1100t are nearly impossible to find under $200. The 840+7950 should last you another year for gaming with an overclock. Upgrade when steamroller comes out.

Yup lower the Ht, ram, and NB multipliers in the bios and start upping the base speed and maybe up the voltage of the cpu by up to 1.45-1.5Volts and you will get at least 3.6 to i3.9Ghz out of it depending on the cpu and cooling and motherboard. Well that is the real quick version of what you can do with your cpu.
