I built my first pc and the specs were
Intel core i5 3470
radeon hd 7850 sapphire
CX500 power supply

when i tried to test boot i heard a sizzling noise coming from the heatsink so i unplugged immediately and didn't find any damage other than the thermal paste almost being completely melted

More about : smoking cpu build

Thermal paste should be sort of liquid-ish anyway, that's why it's called "paste". Was it hot? Are you sure it wasn't just the fan rubbing on a wire or something?

EDIT: Was there actual smoke?

I meant the pre applied one on the stock heatsink. is seemed a little warm but other than that it seems to be fine, no noticeable burns on the motherboard or cpu, and yes i did see smoke

Can you see any scorch marks on either the mobo or CPU? If there was so smoke it has to be from somewhere.

Did it happen immediately, or a few seconds to minutes after power on?

Ah. You may have gotten the 8pin PCIe and 8pin EPX connectors mixed up. That's worrying...

Yikes.

I hope it just fried your MoBo and not your CPU. Chances are you will probably need a new PSU too. If you have another PSU around I would try hooking it up to your MoBo first to see how far you get. Don't use the PCIe power cables. They are the 3+1 connectors. You want to use the 2+2 connector.
