I have a 3-channel controller, 2 slots per channel and 3 identical sticks installed into the 3 channels (a stick per channel). So, I have 3 vacant slots. I want to add more ram. My MB manufacturer says that I can plug 4 sticks and still operate in 3-channel mode

But, I foresee two problems (let's assume that the 4th stick is exactly identical to the first 3):

1. Capacity issue. Assuming that memory frequency is not affected when I add one more stick, how will be performance affected? The mem contr. manufacturer says that multichannel gives the performance boost only in the interleaving mode, when all 3 channels are filled with data at the same rate. Now, first channel has 2x capacity. What will happen with the performance and interleaving?

2. Frequency issue. I know that adding more sticks into the same channel degrades frequency. The frequency depends on the number of sticks per channel. So, when DDR manufacturers sell 1333MHz (CL9) sticks, what do they mean by that? How do they know the how many DIMMs I will install in the channel? How do they specify the lowest frequency on their product without this information? Is it specified for a single stick per channel or there is a limit of DIMMs that can be attached to a channel?

3. How this data is affected if the DIMM I add has a different characteristics?

Taking 3 sticks "saves" only the first question. How will it save the others? Do you mean that questions are answered by practical experiment rather than analysis? Why do we need the theory and forum then? Memory is dirt-cheap! Just buy and try! Why should I buy 3 new modules if I can plug only one to "save" all the answers? What do you mean by "potential"? Does it show how literate you are or makes any sense in this context?

Why do tom' s hardware experts consult like they are cooks? Is there an internet site where I can meet a beginning memory expert that can explain me the basic technical implications of combining DIMM modules?

Wow, well sorry to have suggested such a simple solution as I was only trying to help and the majority of people that come here are looking for low cost easy solutions and not complicated ones.

Good luck with your quest to find the perfect answer, but remember we do have rules here and being verbally abusive is one of them. If you don't like an answer there is no reason to go into a verbal assault demeaning some ones intelligence whom you don't know.

To qualify the answers it is sufficient to look at them. There is no need to know people who answer. Obviously, if these people cannot answer even after realized that something more than "simple solution trying to help" was asked, they are not professional. The only offense here is that you do not want to make your incompetence public. Good luck giving yourself the airs. I just cannot understand how can you advise anything to anybody not answered first the fundamental questions that I have posted?

Oh, yes, the buy-and-try that you recommend always works. There is no need to know about memory anything at all to recommend this. Right. So, I am abused by crazy answers, you are abused by the fact that I am asking for reason. Everything is ok.
