I have a GT 440 1GB GDRR5 and im thinking of upgrading to a I3 3220. It will get bottlenecked by my video card right ? So im going to buy a new one in 2 months maybe im gonna get the GTX 660 TI but in these 2 months how much FPS would i be able to get in Battlefield 3 on medium and low settings and also will the bottleneck be minor or major ?

Solution
The i3-3220 and the GTX 660ti will allow ULTRA/Multiplayer at 1920x1080. I tested it in single player mode at that rez with my Athlon II X4 640 and a GTX 650ti SSC on ULTRA. Gameplay was smooth.

If you get an i3 and a 660ti, you'll be able to play BF3 on high (1080) and achieve 60fps.

As for the time being running the 440gt, medium is out of the question unless you run with a really low resolution. As for low settings, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to do 30fps with the correct settings.

BF3 multiplayer LOVES cores...your Athlon was a quad...the i3 doesn't have the horsepower...BF3 will use as many as 5-6 cores if you have that many...plus, for the sake of looking forward...the i3 is going to become more and more underpowered quickly.

You can't really compare the i3 to an Athlon. The i3 is far superior to the Athlon. Not everything is about cores. It's about efficiency. I agree that BF3 multiplayer runs better with more cores but there is a limit. It doesn't use more than 4 and that's obvious in every benchmark to date. Here is a review of the 3770k vs 8350 http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/fx-8350-core-i7-3770k-gaming-bottleneck,3407-5.html. And before you think about it, BF3 doesn't utilize HyperThreading.

That i3 will play BF3 with ease even though BF3 likes cores, it is a GPU based game.

Took the words right out of my mouth... ;)

The point I was trying to make is if it can play with an old Athlon II X4, it can play better with an IB i3

Then you guys can help him in 12 months when he figures out his i3 won't run any of the new games worth playing at a frame rate worth bothering with. Crysis 3 makes the i3 cry like a little girl. Bioshock Infinite is CPU bound as well, it also like more cores. Planetside 2 won't play more than into 20s for frame rates on an i3. GTA5 coming in a few months is designed for 4 or more cores, and that fact isn't changing anytime soon.

Plus, on a dual core, BF3 omits rendering certain aspects to accomodate for lost performance. That's the ONLY reason the frame rates are even where they are.

@OP: Good luck with your overpriced dual core and the impending overhaul build in 6-12 months when you realize the frame rates are in the toilet. A good quad would be FAR better for you...even a SB i5.

That's a review of a SB i5 running on 4 cores then 2...the difference in frame rate is double...and he's using a GTX560 Ti SLI config...

Hmm...not CPU bound at all huh?

By your logic the i3 keeps up with the i5-3570k and i7-3770k then:

Makes PERFECT sense! The i3 is as powerful as the i5-3570k and i7-3770k /sarcasm.

Chill out dude. This is a computer forum. We're not talking politics. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
The OP was simply saying he was thinking about upgrading to an i3-3220. Of course there are better processors. But his funds may be limited.

I am about as chill as they come...

But honestly...in this day and age...I cannot, in good conscience, recommend a dual core to anyone. You're setting yourself up for failure. You're better off saving another $50 for your build and getting something with 4+ cores. It's only going to get more and more drastically lopsided if you're a gamer. Someone on a budget likely can't afford to upgrade in 12 months when their just built dual core won't play the games they want to play...honestly, I don't recommend the FX4XXX series to anyone who is going to legitimately game...for $20-30 more they can get the FX6300 which makes a lot more sense.
