Hi. I am able to get my mac connected to the wireless LAN no problem, it picks up a valid IP addr, yet when I go hard wire to the LAN outlet, I dont get a valid IP addr. The mac appears to see the network, yet when using DCHP the mac allocates a self determined IP addr rather than an addr from the router. If I set it manually, then it accepts the IP Addr but cant see the internet. I assume it must be something to do with the router but I am lost now.

Any ideas?

thanks

You should post your router type so maybe someone can help you. Your issues is very strange and does sound like a router issue but it could also be a firewall issue either on the end device or the router.

When you set the IP address manually can you ping the router IP...ie your default gate. If not does it at least have the proper ip/mac address in the arp table or is the arp not valid. Sorry don't know the mac command to display the arp table. If you have a arp entry but cannot ping it is likely a firewall, if you do not even have the arp entry you have a very fundamental error. The very first thing a device will do is send a arp for the default gate...it will say who has 192.168.1.1 (or whatever ip you used). It should receive a response.

DHCP is a little more complex but like a arp it is still sending broadcasts

I would recommend you load wireshark on the device so you can actually see the messages. Now it does sometime lie if there is a firewall involved...wireshark may tell you the packet is sent when in fact the firewall drops it.

Did you set up Dns Ip for the Mac when you connected directly to the router?
go to wireless and connect and take note of your Dns Ip
Then under manual settings for your Lan connection set the Dns Ip aswell
