Okay so this is what we have going on here. I have my Asus radeon 5850 hooked up to two monitors, a samsung syncmaster hdtv and a dell E197FP. The Tv is hooked up to an HDMI port and works fine. The Dell monitor is hooked up to the DVI port on the card via a DVI-to-VGA adapter on the monitor. The computer's control panel and AMD Vision software both detect the monitor and give me the option to extend desktop however the monitor does not display any image. When I click the buttons on the monitor it says its in "power-save" mode and to hit and button the keyboard or move the mouse. Very confused by this one, please help!

Which device is the primary device? Also, will the Dell display work properly if it is the only display connected?

Primary device is hdmi tv. Dell display does not work properly as only display... I also plugged in a different monitor that has a DVI port on it so it no longer needed the adapter and it worked immediately...leading me to believe that it is a problem with the adapter i got from radio-shack? Could that be the case?

It could be the adapter or you could be connecting to a DVI-D (digital only) port. To work properly, you must connect to a DVI-I (integrated port that supports digital and analog connections) to support passing the required VGA (analog) signal.

But there's basically no way to change the port on my graphics card to a DVI-I corect?

What specific HD5850 do you have, it may have the proper port? Need the info to look it up.

And no, you can't change the port type.

BTW, many HD5850 variants have 2 DVI ports. You may be able to swap ports.
