I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.
I bought an External Seagate drive a couple years ago. 500GB. Says USB 3.0 all over the product and the Box. The USB cord has blue plastic inside it, and a tag on it stating it is a USB 3.0 cord.

I recently built a new computer, the motherboard is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157323
Has USB 3.0 Ports on the back. I installed the newest Etron USB 3.0 Host Controller drivers for it from the ASRock page for the motherboard, and have tested other USB 3.0 products on the ports, and can verify that the ports are working. Device manager shows no errors for the controller hubs or anything, etc.

When I plug in the Seagate however, the Seagate lights turn on, and stay on, I can feel the drive spinning inside the plastic, but the hard drive never comes up anywhere in windows. Device manager shows nothing, not even an unknown device. It acts like nothing happened. I later found some drivers ON the Seagate, and installed them, restarted computer, etc. Still didn't work.

Any help? Been off and on trying to figure this out for the last half a year now.

try to plug the external drive to another computer, to see if it's detected. if not either the drive(most probable) is damage or the SATA bridge on the external is the one damage, you can then try to take apart the external casing and just plug the drive in the motherboard directly to see if it's detected.

Took off the USM adapter, found a power cord on my PSU and a SATA cable and plugged it all in. Hard drive works through SATA now, this is good enough.
