I'm looking at buying either a 7970 or GTX 680 to upgrade from the 460 I have right now. I found another thread from someone with a similar question, and one of the responses was that you need a 2560x1600 monitor for those cards to be worth it. The one I have right now has a max of 1920x1080. I was wondering if it's still worth upgrading the card if I'm not going to get a monitor with higher res? How big a deal is the increased res? Thanks for any advice guys.

I forgot to ask this, but what are your system specs, because I would be concerned with your current PSU for the 7970/GTX 680?

That's actually false a 7970 or GTX 680 is fine on 1920 x 1080 resolution (personally i go with a GTX 670, but that is up to you).

You should ge the 7970. Also, you could try to downsampling with your monitor to get a higher res.

It's a 750w XFX. I think the 7970 needs 600w. Not sure about the 680. :)

You should be fine with that PSU.

What about the CPU? Without a decent processor those cards are going to be held back and the OP will be wasting money.
Assuming a viable CPU, the GTX670 is only a little slower than the 680, for a fair bit less while the HD7970 is as fast, if not faster, and again, cheaper.
As for a bigger screen: you could up the size, but remember you'll have to sit further away to get the best out of it and they can be expensive, so if you're limited for space I'd stick with the 1080 display.
