CPU Socket Backplate Question

So basically i bought a new cooler because my old one is horrible, its a stock piece of crap. So the new cooler came with its own black backplate for the motherboard. So do i remove the existing plate? Is that even possible? Its a metal plate stuck to black foam, on the rear of the board. The instructions clearly say to remove it and replace with the new one. Im pretty nervous to take this plate off, i dont want to break anything. The screws are to small for the existing standoffs/screw holes (in both length and width) So its either find new screws and jerry rig it, or do what the instructions said and remove this plate. Should i remove the plate? Or is it not worth the risk.

What new cooler and MB do you have? I have removed back plates from several AMD MB's with no problem. Once you remove the four screws from the top mounting bracket the bottom plate shouldn't take too much of a push to get it off. Its usually has some thin dense foam that sticks, but is not really glued on between the back of the MB and the original mounting plate. It is best of course if you do this with the MB out of your case and with nothing mounted to it. Once it is off, you will probably see that things fit better than they seem now.

My mobos quite embarrassing, its a Pegatron HOLLY. with an AMD A8 3870k (less embarrassing this thing packs some punch) in it. There arent any screws top side of the mobo, its a pretty minimalistic socket. The cooler is a Thermaltake Contact 21 universal cpu cooler with FM1 compatibilty (one of the reasons i went for it obviously being the proud sporter of an FM1 chip) oddly enough the fm1 brackets dont line up with my screw holes. the intel ones do perfectly tho, its just the screws dont fit the hole, the holes to big, so im thinking the reason for that is the rear bracket is made for that crappy old cooler and its going to have to go and be replaced by this black thing.

I looked up your MB and see your problem! Well if you can get the intel bracket to work, I would go that way. You will obviously need to get a little creative since you will need to be able to tighten the cooler down for good contact. The cooler looks great. I saw that there are specialty mounting brackets for FM1 sockets, but other people have had difficulty getting them mounted too. You may want to search for these and see if there are any decent options.

Well we took it off and replaced it, looks to have gone ok, went from 58 to 36 degrees in crysis 2 during heavy on screen action. prob going to go to 45 max if the room gets warm. So looks like it all worked out.
