I finished building my computer and my XFX 7870's second fan does not spin. is that because it does not need it right now? or is there something wrong with the card? I have not done anything to crazy with graphics yet, but will be installing all my games soon and need to know if there is a problem or not.

I'm not too sure, but, right click your desktop and go to CCC (Catalyst Control Center) you can check the temperature of your GPU there, if it's below 40 Degrees Celsius while on standby, you're fine and it may be the GPU not needing a second fan, i use a 7860 also, and it gets a little above 50 Degrees Celsius when gaming, on a normal heat day.

EDIT: I opened my PC and both of my 7870 fans are spinning, there may be something not quite right with your GPU or circuiting ?

Definitely a problem. Both fans are meant to spin, unless its a second card of a CFX system, in which both fans shouldn't be spinning because of AMD's Zerocore technology. I'm guessing its only a single card, so something is definitely wrong. Replace that card before you game, nobody wants your card to fry, because it has two fans for a reason ;)

I took out my card and looked at it, and the fan is too close to the metal front plate and hits it on every spin. Before when I would start up my computer it would spin for a second and then quit. After putting it back in, I ran my computer on its side and the fan continued spinning untill I shut it off but kept on hitting the plate. Also both fans look like they arent centered right, but that could be the sticker on the middle not placed right while spinning. I dont suppose there is a way to fix this, im porbably going to have to return it arent I

If the fan is hitting something it is definitely defective. Contact the manufacturer.

i am having this exact same problem. the fan is hitting the metal case and preventing it from spinning. i pushed a little onthe fan and heard a little grind type noise and it would spin properly but very quickly it will go back to the offset position and start grinding again.
