I was wondering if there are any general guidelines to CPU or GPU bottlenecking. My old HP p6130y (Phenom 9750 and has a Sapphire HD 4850). Now, as I am aware, according to this page:

The mobo will only support up to a processor upgrade possibility that is no longer in production so I am stuck with the stock 2.4 GHz Phenom. With that, I was wondering how far I can upgrade the GPU without having serious issues with the CPU bottlenecking the GPU.

I was thinking of getting a HD 5450 or 6450 to replace the old 4850. Would that work out with the 2.4 GHz CPU? Would there be better options?

Solution
The 7770 should handle most current games up to 1920x1080 if you lower some of the eye-candy (particularly Anti Aliasing) but if your display has a lower resolution I'd go for a HD7750.
Do n't expect miracles from a older generation CPU, even if it is a quad core device, sadly most of the games that can really use a quad need something faster to really fly.
With the old system. It not only bottle necking the CPU but replacing the power supply with a one with a higher wattage then the stock one. Most old hp had 250-300w units. The other issue is the video slot on the md is it pci or agp??? My self I would buy a newer pc and let the kids or give it to a senior center as a web/word pc.

Oh I forgot to mention, I'm using a 500W PSU with this system right now. The mobo has one PCIE slot so crossfiring is out of the question.

And thanks for pointing out that those are downgrades. How far of an upgrade can I get with this stock processor?

I have recently built a new computer but I would just like to know my GPU upgrade options for this one.

Edit: I was thinking of maybe this as an upgrade:

Edit 2: I was thinking of this also because the 7770 might be a good crossfire candidate for a future system when this system is scrapped so it'll be a good investment. Any opinions on this?

Yeah I'm not really expecting it to play some high end games with high settings even after an upgrade to a 7xxx mainly because of the limitations of the CPU. I will consider the upgrade options up to a 7770. I've watched some Youtube videos of this processor + certain GPUs playing BF3 on a somewhat low resolution and it looked acceptable.

Thanks guys!
