Hello Everyone,
This is my first post here so please pardon me if I am missing any standard template
I am Shridhar from Pune, India and I am doing my masters in engineering
As part of my project and future research plans, I now need to build a PC that can help me achieve the following
1. Provide a good environment to execute multi-threaded programs in a cluster setup
2. Provide the ability to run minimum 2 servers as virtual machines (Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS) which can be one of the nodes on my home cluster
3. Future Proof for at least next five years until I complete my research

P.S: I already have below machines to be setup for nodes in cluster
1. AMD Phenom II Quad-core running on 4 GB DDR2 RAM (It was primarily my HTPC but will be re utilized for the home cluster)
2. A laptop with AMD A10 Quad-core on 4GB DDR3 RAM - My primary tool for studies
3. A Pentium HT based system which is now converted to a Print / Mail / Backup Server

Now I have been reading multiple threads in this forum and going through lots of youtube videos to get an understanding of what components can help me achieve the requirement, and below is what i could come up with for the build

Disclaimer: Even though most of the components are used by Gamers, my selection is strictly to try and keep it close to provision of good performance

CPU: AMD FX 8350 Vishera
Motherboard: ASRock 990FX Extreme9 Motherboard
RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR3 8 GB (2 x 8 GB) PC RAM (CMZ8GX3M1A1600C10), total 16 GB in dual channel mode (Future plans to extend it to 32 GB)
PSU: Seasonic S12II 620 Watts PSU
HDD: OCZ Vertex 3 60 GB SSD Internal Hard Drive (VTX3-25SAT3-60G)
Graphics Card: Sapphire AMD/ATI Radeon HD 6450 2 GB DDR3

I have already Purchased
Netgear JNR3210 N300 Wireless Gigabit Router
D-Link NCB-C6UGRYR1-2mts - Cat 6 Cables - 3 Nos
Roccat Taito Softpad Neoprene - This is also good for desktops, not only gamers
Microsoft Wireless Desktop 3000
Red Gear HDMI Cable 3 mtrs - 2 NOS
NZXT Source 210 Elite Black
Operating System: Windows 7 SP1 64 bit
Sony EX430 HDTV - This is used as my computer monitor as well

Now, I keep hearing that Intel i7 is better than FX for multithreading due to its HT architecture, etc but I am not very sure on which is better, also choosing an i7 will increase my budget more,
and i cant choose an i5 because in games, at times i5 may beat FX vishera but with more recent games moving to massive multithreaded models, the difference is fast diminishing, so for coding i5 will not make the cut mostly

Please provide your inputs as i plan to finalize the purchase in a couple of days (original plans were for today - our new year, but thought to get some expert opinions before i start the build)

Thanks for reading !

Cheers,
Shri

Really choosing between the FX8350 and the I7 is a budget question. The I7 has better core performance and both can handle 8 threads at a time so really it comes down to what you want to spend and there is nothing wrong with going for the FX for its cost savings.
