Hello,

I'm gonna get a new GPU in my old-ish rig.
My CPU will bottleneck the GPU, But I will be upgrading the rest of my system in the end of this year. I just want to get a good GPU now instead of getting a low/med end GPU + low/med end CPU because I am on a budget.

In my country the GTX 660 and HD 7870 are the same price, But I don't get the amd never settle games for free with the HD 7870.

If I want to get the Hd 7870 I need to get a new PSU which will cost a lot because I don't want to get a poor PSU. The GTX 660 will be just fine on my current PSU. (450W)

So my question is: Is it worth paying around 70 euros more for a new PSU just to get the HD 7870? Or should I just get the GTX 660?

It's really just the same as if the HD 7870 would be 230 euros and the GTX 660 160 euros.

Thanks in advance!

Honestly it depends on a few factors. Just based of getting a new PSU I would get the GTX. But also, what you going to use it for, what CPU do you have, and what Mobo do you have?

Sorry forgot to add my system specs :/
I only want to play games with the card, Bioshock infinite, Battlefield 4, Max payne 3, Far cry 3 and GTA V if it comes to PC. I want to play them on atleast high and my monitor resolution is 1680x1050.

Current rig:
CPU: Amd athlon ii x3 450
GPU: gt 440
MOBO: Biostar n68s3b
RAM: 4GB 1333mhz
STORAGE: 500GB HDD + 60GB SSD boot drive
PSU: 450w ms-tech

With this I would still go with the Nvidia. Its more compatible and con run these games much better. Also its compatible with your setup. If I may ask, do you know what else your putting into it? Because once you have the new GPU you should focus more on what works good with that and your games.

Actually let me rethink this.

You Mobo only has PCIE 1 which may cause a couple of problems. I know that both GPUs can fit, but there are a couple of compatibility issues. If your going to get either of these, you may need to upgrade your Mobo. Can you tell me what case you have?

Also if your planning on upgrading your processor (which you should definitely do), I would go with an Intel. They are more expensive, but when you look at the facts, they are built better, coded better, and run better with today's games and applications. You can get an i5-3570K for about $210 (160 Euros) and OC it and that ususally runs very well. But if you have the money you should definitely get an i7-3770K, which is $320 (245 Euros). If you get it before the 17th you can save 15 Euros with a coupon from Tiger Direct: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2372989

So with the new stuff I recommended:

Mobo: ASUS LGA1155 mATX: 61 Euros

CPU:
i5-3570K: 165 Euros
OR
i7-3770K: 245 Euros

GPU: GTX 660: 70 Euros

Total: 296 with i5, 376 with i7

By the way, do you have a link to the GTX 660 your getting?

The thing with PCIE is that they work with each other, but with each new version there's stuff that needs to be 'converted' so to say for a 3.0 to work on a 2.0. The way they did 3 to 2 works fine, but jumping from 3 to 1, some of the 'conversion' wont work, so you'll get errors, the frames wont be as good, it wont look as good. Those are just a few to mention.

For me, I have dual GTX 680 4GBs ($1000), an i7-3770k ($320), an ASUS SABERTOOTH Z77 LGA 1155 ($240), which is a Hardcore gamer's "perfection" just to say. And it is a lot just to be that, at $1560 just for that, which is 1193 Euros :p. I know you may not want to spend that much but that's just en example of what you can get for great performance. I can run BF3 at about 150 frames max settings, and run it across 3 monitors at 100 FPS without dropping below 60. And I have two so it can run better across 3 monitors. And at that, even Dual GTX 680 2GB reference models on stock settings are better than a single GTX Titan. :p lol

Even if you were to take out one GPU, you'd still be getting great performance on one screen. At that it would be 810 Euros.

I take it you haven't cranked up aa to max though across 3 monitors? Try running a titan and you might see the performance in heavy action could differ a bit. I'm running a single one across 3 monitors in 3d with everything to high. Aside from that limiting factor of price on them I would recommend the titan very much as a single gpu against sli setups. No profiles to wait for. No need to worry about the extra heat buildup overly much since you only have one card. And its got enough vram that the only game I need to drop aa to medium on with 3 monitors in 3d is crysis 3. Everything else runs smooth as butter.

dude .. my 2 cents here .. get your system upgraded ... seriously .. even if you buy a great gpu this system would not let it perform !!! its gonna be a huge bottleneck to current range of graphics cards!! let alone the compatibility issues that you would get... get a decent upgrade done .. if u r short on cash then go for an amd system but still i would suggest go get an upgrade .. if u have to wait a few months to gather ur budget .. please do so .. i sincerely feel so ..

I have had my settings on what you are saying, minus the 3D because there's no point in that. >.> And actually running two GPUs in SLI is a lot cooler. I run mine and running lets say DayZ, it runs at about 110 FPS on one screen and about 60 on 3 monitors. A Titan running that wouldn't be able to compare in the least. My GPUs usually idle at about 15ºC and never go above 40ºC.
