Blank Screen, lost desktop

Acer Aspire One D257-13448, Windows XP
Pressed FN + F6, after that I have no desktop, only blank screen. Tried reversing Keystroke command, no result.

At start up the Acer logo appears, then the list of system stuff, then small print 'windows'at the bottom of screen - next should be desktop icons, but none appear, only blank screen. When I toggle FN + F6 there is a hint of backlight.

Tried F8, F10 on reboot and only got choice of safe mode Looking to do factory reset but suggested F10 is not giving me the option.

Any suggestions? I don't know any complicated computer stuff. Thank you. jan

Thank you Ken, but that was one of the first things I tried. Netbook has no disk drive and my screen is black except for the faint hint of a back light when I toggle FN + F6 hot keys. Can't see anything to see if it's a driver problem or to locate driver to download.
