Looking for AM2+ processor

Howdy all,

I am in the process of piecing a desktop together that I'd like to game on. I don't have much to work with right now, and am picking up the 3 major pieces from a rig my old roommate was running as part of an audio-processing machine that has since been upgraded for $100. I'm grabbing his old motherboard (GIGABYTE GA-MA770-DS3), processor (AM2 dual-core) and RAM (6GB DDR2). Honestly, the only reason I am going about things in this fashion is that I don't have much of anything to start with for this build. Obviously, I'd like to start with something different, but doing things this way allows me to afford all the other pieces/accessories/peripherals I'd like to have in the finished rig, leaving me to only have to upgrade the 3 above pieces at a later date and be 100% finished. I would only really expect to have to run these 3 pieces in this all-but-finished rig for about 8-9 months before I can completely replace them with the pieces I'd really wanted to use.

My question is with that particular motherboard, 6GB of RAM, and the eVGA GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST that I planned to purchase for the rig - assuming I will have a basic AM2 dual core processor - what is the best processor I could upgrade to/plug into that motherboard that would allow me to run this thing without constantly wanting to toss the whole thing out the window? The GIGABYTE website claims the board only supports AM2/AM2+ processors, but I have been seeing and reading in other threads claims that certain boards that support AM2+ processors will also accommodate an AM3. Since I cannot find anything regarding AM3 on this particular motherboard, I figured it was time to create a thread and ask the community.

The 3 games I'll be wanting to install and run immediately after getting up and running will be Diablo3, SCII, and WoW. Obviously, the goal is to be able to run all of those at the highest graphic settings. Also, I obviously am planning for that list of games to grow once I get up and running and see what my capabilities/limitations are. Any advice and/or guidance here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

An AM3 processor should work in your AM2+ motherboard. The big upgrade to the AM3 chips was the addition of a DDR3 memory controller. You will not be able to use the DDR3 memory controller on your AM2+ motherboard, but the AM3 chips still have DDR2 controllers in them, so you should be fine. Gigabyte specifically lists that it supports the Phenom II x4 940, so processor wattage support shouldn't be an issue. Seeing that the Phenom II line was discontinued, I think you will be more limited by what's available within your budgetary concerns.

There are multiple revisions for the board listed. Be careful which page you are referencing. PCB 1.0 does not list the PII x6 as supported, only PCB 2.0 does.

Yes, like bigpinkdragon286 has mentioned - There seems to be both a revision 1 and revision 2. The earlier has a serial port on the rear, the newer one does not. Judging by the pictures that I have of the motherboard which I'll be receiving, it is the earlier version (revision 1) of the motherboard. The spec page for revision 1 does look different. Not sure if there is just a simple BIOS upgrade that makes them support the same things, or not. That does change things..

From looking at the processor support pages for both models, it would appear the newer revision did not support the older Phenom II processors anymore. That seems a bit odd, but no sense taking chances, however I actually think the 940 and 920 would be a tad troublesome to find anyway, so maybe a non issue.
