I am currently trying to decide between these 2 CPU's. I can get the FX 6300 with an Asus M5A97 LE R2.0 or I can get the i5 3350p with the MSI B75MA-E33 Matx board.

by choosing the i5 I have to get a cheaper B75 board, Is it worth it?

Also do these Mobo's support windows 8?

Which of these 2 combo's would give better performance in video games and emulators especially Dolphin. Or would be better to choose?

Overclocking isn't really a big deal to me... If I overclock the FX 6300 and it still doesn't perform as well as the i5 3350p then whats the point?

If you all have any other suggestions I only have a budget of $240 for a CPU and MoBo so keep that in mind.

The i5 3350p is the better cpu and also consumes less power.

I5 setup is the best choice. The B75 supports PCI-E 3.0, While the M5A97 doesn't. That Will provide better gaming performance(GPU performance). However the difference right now is only ranging from 0-10%, the number will grow as the next generation of GPUs launch.

The i5 is also better in almost every Way. There is really no reason buying the FX 6300 over the i5, if you have the money to spend on it.

Both support Windows 8.

The other thing to consider is that the 6300 can overclock - the 3350p can't. That means the 6300 would win in this particular scenario... if you overclock it.

That being said, dolphin is only dual threaded - that means that the 3350p would win hands down for that use, as each core is significantly faster.

Get the i5.

Sure, you can overclock the 6300, but then it starts getting really hot and consuming a lot of power, compared to the intel chip. The i5 at stocks speeds will be fine, since many games still use only 2 cores. Some use 4, and only a select few use over 4. Whenever 4 or less cores are being used, which is the majority of the time, the i5 wins.

It will not improve gaming performance in any noticeable way at all.

It isn't going to cripple anything with better GPU's. Not to mention the 6300 can overclock well and the 3550p is very limited in that area.

Get the i5, i just upgraded from an fx 6300 to an i5 3570k. Benchmarks show average and minimum frames, they dont show the frequency of frame drops and spikes in real world gameplay. My fx 6300 would have much more frequent and jarring frame drops. For example in far cry 3 same gpu (7870 ghz ) they both average thne same average frames around 50 at 1680x1050 but the fx 6300 framerate drops to the minimum of 35ish quite often, while the i5 rarely does.

I'd recommend the FX-6300 for a couple reasons.
1. It is cheaper, put the money you save into a GPU.
2. If you overclock it, it will have a similar performance as the i5-3350P.
3. More and more applications are making use of more than four cores. While there might not be many now, in a couple years there might be quite a few.

Your GPU is more important than the CPU because of graphics rendering. You should spend more on the GPU than the CPU if you want a good gaming PC. The people who are recommending i5-3500p are not taking this into account. In terms of gaming, the most important part is the GPU, followed by the CPU, and then the RAM. A SSD can also bolster performance if you want to run the OS and applications on it and store files on an HDD. The fact of the matter is you can do so much with the money you save with an FX-6300 that will offer greater gaming performance than spending $180 to $200 on an i5-3350P.
