Hi guys

Please help, I have low transfer speeds when copying/moving data between my internal HDD to my external HDD and also when moving files from one partition to another within my external HDD. I used my external on a friends pc with similar specs to mine and tranfer rate was double than mine.
My transfer speed is on average of 13.5mb/sec compared to my friends(30mb/sec) doing the same task.

Tried using Teracopy with no significant improvement.

Machine specs:Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33GHz,Windows 8 x64,4GB RAM, 500GB Seagate Baracuda 7200rpm SATA internal,2TB Seagate Expansion Desk external drive. My friends drive are WD's.

Any help would be highly appreciated,Thanks

Solution
Some factors which affect transfer speeds
Disabling Anti virus temporarily
Memory usage - have nothing else running that will soak up memory/CPU usage (Friend's PC got more RAM?)
Defrag your HDD-I use Smart Defrag, Defrag and Optimise option.
Ensure latest USB drivers
Check USB cable is 'High Speed' (Though if you used same cable on your friend's PC, rule that out!)

Little trick I've been using to speed up file transfers since Vista,... not going to make them run at turbo speeds, but definitely an improvement.

Speed up file copy & delete

1. Disable 'Remove Differential Compression'.

a. Click on Start button, then go to Control Panel.
b. Click on Programs link.
c. Under Programs & Features section, select Turn Windows Features on or off link.
d. Unselect (untick) Remote Differential Compression checkbox.
e. Click OK.
f. Wait for the feature to be deactivated.
g. When done, restart computer.

2. Disable TCP/IP 'Receive Window Auto-Tuning' & 'Receive Side Scaling'

a. Open an elevated command prompt with administrator rights.
b. Type the following commands and press Enter:

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled

c. Reboot computer.
