Does the type of motherboard you replace an old one with matter?

Hi,
I have a Gateway GM5084 and the motherboard has become non-functional and am seeking to replace it. Do I have to replace it with another GM5084? If so where would I find one? If not then what kind of motherboard could I replace it with? Ive seen GATEWAY GM5072 GM5088 GM5089E GT4009 motherboards that look very similar to mine but not 100% the same. Is that an ok substitute?

What you would look for is if has the same socket as your CPU and if it supports the type of ram you have (ddr2 or ddr2).
You dont necessarily need to replace it with the same mobo.

The RAM says its 512 MB DDR, so as long as I can find a motherboard that fits that and the CPU, I should be good?

One last question, will my current harddrive and CD player have to be changed or will those parts also work?

That depends on the connections.

If you have IDE parts and get a board with IDE, it should be fine.
If you have SATA and get a board with SATA, it should be fine.

If you have IDE and get a board that only has SATA, then you will need adapters(some say they are fine, other say they are bad)or new drives.
Same goes for if you have SATA drives and an IDE board.

IDE cables are flat in most cases and have 40 pins(80 wires for ATA66 and faster cables) while sata cables are much smaller with only 7 contacts.
