I'm building a new computer, and I need to get an OS and windows was the only option for gaming. I didn't get an optical drive cause I would never use it and I heard that I could just use a usb flash drive for my OS. My brother is a student, so I want to get that 'upgrade to windows 8 pro' deal ($70) and I need it in idiot's terms how I do that. (I have a computer with windows 7 right now if that is needed)

The Windows 8 upgrade for students should ONLY be used by students.

In any case, you can install Win7 or 8 off a USB stick with this. You will need the ISO image of windows(MS provides it when you purchase online).

Windows 7 ISO images can be downloaded here.

These are MS downloads(hosted by digitalriver) and are clean, It is NOT worth getting an iso from anyone else.

I'm going to be a student in the fall anyway, already accepted by academic scholarship. (but that doesn't matter right now I guess)

I'm a little confused, is the win 7 ISO just an unregistered product so I will have to buy the code? Wouldn't the win 8 be better?

The Win 8 Upgrade requires an existing installation of Win 7.

So I would have to buy win 7 to get win 8? I read before that I could use the win 8 as a regular ISO and I only needed a win 7 install on a separate computer because you needed a product key to unlock the download. (that was for the deal for $40, though, so it might have changed) If I have to buy windows 7, then I'll just stick with that.

Actually, you don't need a usb key, dvd or any device to put the download on. I just did it.

You need windows 7 installed on your hdd and running. I propose a new hdd and a fresh install Win 7.
When you buy the software online, they send a product key.
Then you log to your MS account at the Ms store.
Then it's there to download. A tiny file. Just click on it and it will download and install 8.1. No need to put it on any device. It's very easy.
But before you install 8.1 have your MS account for the store on paper with you, because during the install they force you to put it in.
