I just recently built my first computer. And more often than not, when I view a video my computer freezes. It has not happened upon DVD playback as of yet, but I haven't intensively tested it. It has happened while watching Youtube, Netflix, Hulu, and Autodesk Inventor tutorials. I ran memtest86 for about 8 passes and no errors. I tested each stick of RAM individually and the freezing still occurred. The freezing has occurred even with my videocard removed so I know that cannot be the source of the problem. Please help. Thank you!

By "freezing" I mean that the screen stills had I have no control of mouse movement, nor can I use CTRL+ALT+DEL. The sound stutters, but sounds as though the video is playing in slow-motion. In some cases the freezing passes, in most others it does not.

My build is as follows:
Processor: Intel i7 3770K
Motherboard: ASUS P8-Z77 LK
Graphics: ASUS Radeon HD 7870 DCII
Memory: G.SKILL RIPJAWS X 16 GB (2 x 8GB) 1600 MHz (yet defaulted to 1333 MHz)
Hard Drive: Samsung 840 Pro 128 GB
Power Supply: Rosewill CAPSTONE 650W (80 PLUS GOLD Certified)
Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

Solution
Hi,

Process of elimination

1) Update the Intel display driver to the latest version

2) Update your GPU drivers to the latest.

3) Set the memory to XMP.

See if any of that helps.

If not update UEFI and see if that makes any difference also.

I am assuming your CPU is not overclocked in any way.

Usually I'm on DVI on my video card, but it has happened on HDMI on my motherboard. The freezing has occurred with my graphics card removed. My flash player is updated and I mostly use Chrome anyway, which has Flash embedded.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I downloaded the latest version drivers to a USB and have attempted to run the driver for Intel Graphics and Intel VGA, however, I receive an error message for both notifying me that "This system does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software." I also receive this message when I try to run the IRSS driver (Version 2.1.0.1002) from the set of USB drivers.

My GPU driver is the 13.3 Beta Catalyst Controller.

My memory has been set to XMP (CPU is not overclocked), and I just now updated my UEFI to the Version 1001 driver. Just to note, this is the first time I have updated my UEFI so I hope that it resolves the problem. I just recovered a system image on top of everything so my system is pretty bare.

I assume this was a fresh Windows install when you first built this system?

Where did you download the drivers from? The drivers for your board should not give that message unless something deeper is amiss.

A few more things:

1) remove one of the memory modules from the system and see if the freeing still occurs. If it does not we'll need to make some memory timing adjustments.

2) If the system still freezes with one memory module, try removing some of the software that you suspect may be the cause.

"My GPU driver is the 13.3 Beta Catalyst Controller." Beta versions are for testing purposes, for reviewing. and not for general use. I'd suggest you go back to a non-Beta version but you'd need to uninstall the Beta version. Download the correct version, first.

The network card has to be compatible with the OS, how did you figure it was the network card? And, what did you do to remedy the situation?
There was no mention of a netwrok card in your details so we have to go by what details you provide, there are no hard and fast cures for PC problems, sometimes it could be the networtk card (or a standoff touching the holder of the card) or some incompatibility with other things.

Considering the issues "has happened while watching Youtube, Netflix, Hulu, and Autodesk Inventor tutorials." that isn't exactly altogether helpful without more information. It could be your brwoser, the Beta version of ATi Catalystr, or your netwrok card is only 56 kbps.

I'n not berating you but you do need to add as much details as possible including all your hardware when making a query.

If the problem persists, make another post. Have a nice day. Happy computing.. :)
