simple tec external hard drive

simple tec was used on vista, have new computer with windows 8. I plug it in and nothing happens. Need to transfer my files. Does it need a new driver, if so where do I go

Winkey + X, Choose Disk Management
Expand to full screen
Look for your Ext drive in the right pane.
If shown, right-click in the area showing that drive.
Click "make drive active" if you have the option.
Click Ok
