Mother board compatibility issues

Install a System Information program to know your system specifications, I'd suggest Speccy and based on the program's scan of your system, you'll know which motherboard socket you have (either Socket 478 or 775).. and based on that specific information you can search for a processor by "Intel Socket 478" or "Intel Socket 775".

If it turns out to be Socket 478 you may want to upgrade the computer to Intel Socket 1155, or AMD Socket AM3+... other inexpensive AMD sockets are FM2, and earlier sockets AM3 and discontinued FM1

If you only do basic computing and need an inexpensive replacement, check these:

So basically if i buy a new AMD motherboard then it would work? No need to change anything else?

No, if you have a Intel Pentium 4 HT processor and you want to keep using it, you need an Intel motherboard as replacement. You can only use Intel Socket motherboards with intel socket processors, OR AMD socket motherboards with AMD socket processors.

Also there are different Sockets in either Intel or AMD so you can only use a Socket 478 or 775 motherboard with your Intel Pentium 4 HT processor... If you want to upgrade the system you would need to buy the (Intel or AMD) motherboard and processor, and compatible RAM sticks.
