I currently have a Sapphire 7850 2GB in my Asus M5A97 R2.0 MoBo in the 16x slot. I am looking at getting a second 7850 or 7870 to put in the other slot, but it would be running at 4x speeds. Is there really that much performance hit or should I look at selling my current card and getting something like the 7950.

Solution
You will not see any bottlenecks. I personally benchmarked a 7950 using and x4 and x16 slot and in crossfire using an fx8150. There isn't any noticeable performance loss with x4 pcie slot compared to x16 and there is significant performance gain with 2 cards in crossfire.

Sorry for bumping an old thread - I'm faced with a similar dillema

I've got a PCI 16x 3.0 and PCI 4x 2.0

I'm about 80% sold on getting a GTX 780. I was looking at the 780ti but honestly I feel if I'm going to spend 700+ I might as well do Xfire despite having a 16x/4x setup on my Asus P8Z77-V LX.

I really just want to avoid upgrading and swapping out my motherboard
