Dell Studio 1555 Freezing / Locking Up

I am experiencing lockups / freezes on my Dell Studio 1555 laptop. It's done this since the day I got it, and I've ignored it b/c I had a backup pc. Now I need this Dell to function properly, and must tackle this problem. I'm looking at System Event log, and see entries with event ID 7006, "System Control Manager" The ScRegSetValueExW cal failed for FailureActions with the following error" Access is Denied. Any help?

Thank you, Ken Rivers! I think you might have hit the nail on the head, it seems like it was the AVG app. I went in and tweaked some settings, then did some system maintenance and it ran for about 12 hours straight overnight. Thanks again!
