Dear all,

I have 4000 EUR budget to spend on a statistical computing machine. I am entirely new to this - until now I have worked with whatever machine was put on my desk. The purchase is for a research position in atmospheric data analysis using the statistical programming language R, and C++.

Approximate Purchase Date:
before July 2013

Budget Range:
4000 EUR for everything (incl. shipping). This might be negotiable up to 5000 EUR.

System Usage from Most to Least Important:
The system is for statistical computing with R (and possibly C++ if R gets too slow). Heavy tasks will be inversion and multiplication of large matrices and computing statistical summary measures of large data sets. I would like to take advantage of multicore and gpu computing. Datasets to be processed can be on the order of a few Gigabytes. The total amount of data to be saved will be on the order of a couple of Terabytes.
Further tasks that are important are backup of the data files and fast network connection.

Are you buying a monitor:
Yes

Parts to Upgrade:
This is an entirely new build.

Do you need to buy OS:
No, using Linux (Debian, Ubuntu or Arch, not sure yet which is most suitable ... any adivce?)

Preferred Website(s) for Parts:
none

Location:
Devon, United Kingdom

Parts Preferences:
none

Overclocking:
No

SLI or Crossfire:
No

Your Monitor Resolution:
Not really important, but let's say 1920x1200.

Additional Comments:
A quiet and energy-efficient machine that produces little heat would be nice. As I said, I use the R language, which supports multicore and gpu computing, of which I would like to take advantage. At some point I will probably want to visualize some of the results using OpenGL.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading:
I am starting a new research position and there is a designated budget for a statistical computing machine.

Thanks a lot in advance.

The six cores of the 3930K and the DDR3 2133 RAM will allow to generate those huge data sheets (or setup a RAM disk if you choose), the Fire Pro will allow you to hook up to at least four monitors off a single card, extremely high end power supply and case, and the OCZ Vector is the single fastest SSD on the market. The hot swap HD bays of the 800D will also make things easier.
